Jemmy the bar about, if it "clunks" you've found your culprit, if not move on and see if you can replicate it in any other part of the system.
Also, as mentioned check the wheel bearings, are you 100% convinced it is coming from the front of the vehicle, as the compliance type bushes on the back of the Mondeo misbehave occasionally.

I dont know if this helps or not but I have a ford galaxy and I too had a knocking on the front ended up was the anti roll bar bushes (I am not very good with cars sorry) I had a 94 M reg mondeo before and it too had the same problem. Hope this helps0
