Is there any way to see the cost of those toll roads together with a route map on the viamichelin website? I cannot see any option to create a 'custom' trip.
We went from Calais to Rouen on a different trip and the toll was only about EUR7, and I know the Caen-Rennes-Nantes motorways are all toll free so I don't think your option1 route would cost much even if you used the motorways. Not sure if the Rouen-Caen section or the bit after Nantes is free though (we headed West to St Jean de Monts from Nantes, off the motoway).

Try using key amps route planner http://www.keycamp.co.uk/travel-options/route-planner.html you can just select a site in the vendee then choose Quickest, most economical, recommended route etc.

We have done the vendee fr.om Caen and its a lovely drive.

We are going a bit further (down to languedoc) so will have about a ten hour journey assuming we use tolls.

Don't forget to carry some dosh in case of breakdown. In France for example even with breakdown cover you'll have to pay up front on the motorway. A short tow off the motorway and 30mins roadside assistance would be 144.50 Euro's, OK you might be able to claim it back but you have to pay it there and then.

Depending on your destination your motorway route does not have to be a bank breaker. We do Dunkerque to Beziers paying tolls of around 22 Euro one way
using mostly motorway. The spectacular A75 motorway is free apart from the bridge at Millau.

Which should in the car with you not the boot, and from August 1st a framed photo of François Hollande (or Gordon Brown as we knew him) should also be carried.

Can't say for sure but the maps/options look very similar to viamichelin... maybe just a mirror with inclusive campsite locations???

I understand that the breathalyser is law from tomorrow, but drivers cannot be fined for not having one until November, correct? In which case, I can get away without purchasing one, yes?

1st of JULY isn't it, but I've got mine anyway and realistically you need 2.

We will be getting one (two!) saves any issues if stopped, at this rate give it a few years and there will be no room for luggage, we will have a car full of safety equipment!
