Better storage heaters or installing gas central heating questions.

We currently have electric storage heaters and hate them. On the plus side the 2 we have are enough to heat the house when both working and it does work out quite cheap BUT there is no heat in the evenings, boiling in the mornings and no real control.
My question is how much it would realistically cost us to install central heating in total. I think its about £300 to connect to the supply as the next road has it. Our house is a (very small, think box room) 3 bed end terrace red brick ex housing association 1980s house. For some reason our road on the estate didn't get gas (grrr).
I had thought about getting modern electric radiators installed but I am told this will eat money. I had thought about better storage heaters but not only would central heating make our lives easier I suspect it would add to resale value of house.
Anyone any idea what this would roughly cost me and how to go about it? Do I just go to British gas or are there others I can safely go to? We're fairly low income but want to look after our house, and I'm fairly clueless about home improvements sadly. (It had to be pointed out to me what a con these guys are and I'd nearly signed up... economy-radiators. )
Thankyou.

Hi,
Why dont you check out the heaters on glass heating 'dot' 'com'
They have energy efficient heating systems and do not need to run any gas supplies!!!
Hope this helps.
Cheers,

Hmm.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I joined today to ask the question as I've only lurked before to read threads. I'm not particularly interested in any 'miracle' heaters as I believe they all are pretty similar. I can't see how electrical day heaters can be a good thing at all.
Really wanted to know how much a conversion to gas would be and how to. Even start trying to find out. Presumably British gas would be expensive and I can't seem to find any guide quotes on their site.0 -

No idea. Thought my post was clear I wasn't interested in electric day heaters. Do you have any advice?0

Avoid BG like the plague, they are vastly over-priced & sadly lacking in quality workmanship. Go with a local independent GasSafe installer, one who comes recommended, not just a wild stab in the yellow pages. A rough (very) realistic figure would be £3000 - £4000 but it's impossible to say with any accuracy as so many factors about your particular installation can affect the cost.

I think your £300 to get gas to the property is widly optimistic. Unless it is right outside you garden, and even then I would guess at £1000. Go to this link and contact you local gas transporter. Once you have gas in the house your Central heating will be around what has been said.

Thanks. We had them around about 3 years ago andgas is pretty much at the bottom of our garden simply as the way the network of cul de sacs work. it was that price if we were happy for it to cut across the garden. Next door got a quote and it was a lot more for them as it would have to trail around our property. (we're end terrace onto a sort of green between cul de sacs. Just our road on the estate didn't get gas but one almost at right angles to our garden has!
We aren't able to save up the money to covert the house unfortunately. Could get to about 2000 . I guess our best option is to replace the poorly storage heater.

I know you've said you'd like to get away from electric heating, but the new generation of heaters from Dimplex may be worth a look. They're the Duo Heat range. I fitted 5 of them to update an ancient electric heating system almost 2 years ago now, my customer still raves about them.

Thank you. That's helpful. I'll take a look.0
