Divorcing - need new credit card on low income

Hello All,

I've had a Tesco credit card for years (as an additional card holder on dh's account). We always pay the balance in full, and have no other debts other than the mortgage which we pay regularly.

We are now splitting so I need to apply for my own Tesco credit card. However at the moment my income is only £5500 p.a. Will I get turned down at this level?

If I wait till I have tax credits and maintenance coming in will I stand more chance?

I don't want to damage my credit rating by applying for a card now if I will definitely be turned down.

you wont be eligable on that wage, you also cant normaly count mantinece
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

What, so I won't be eligible full stop?!

Can someone confirm that tax credits and maintenance won't count as income either?

    What do I do then?!!

You can apply, their requirement is minimum income of £5500... But that does not mean that you'll get accepted.

    Thank you.

Is the £5500 minimum income requirement just for a Tesco credit card, or across all credit cards?

So, if I can't include maintenance as my income, can I include tax credits?

You'll have to make your own research, each providers will have different minimum criteria....
  • When my ex and I split I was in the same situation - additional card holder on his account so I had to open a new account and apply for a credit card. I was running my own business at the time and hardly drawing any salary - I included my ctc and wtc and my maintenance when asked my salary (I applied online) - it WAS my salary - it was what i was living on and it paid the bills. There was no indication on the website that i couldn't include it

I was accepted on a O% deal straightaway
  • Actually it didn't ask for my 'salary' it asked for 'income' - that was why i assumed it was ok to include tc and maintenance

I had another thought on this.

Could I in theory apply for a credit card just for me at this stage but quoting dh's income as well as mine to apply?

We are still married at this point - not even formally separated - and he is happy for me to do this.

Would this be acceptable for a Tesco credit card? Does anyone know?

Some card applications ask for 'household' income and have 'homemaker' as an option in the employment question section.

I got 2 of my cards this way (I'm a SAHM).

Assuming you've thought it all through properly and you're not storing up future debt problems for yourself, then I can't see why you couldn't include the household income as long as it is in existence at time of application.
