I've got three sources that refer to them as on-ear so I think that's what I'll go with:

Agree with on-ear. From Grado's own website:Somewhat smaller than the PS1000’s, they fit “on” the ear and not over/around the ear.Top Wins - £1,900 ITV Real Deal, titanium bike frame, 55" TV & 12m Sky Q, signed guitar, 7 night eco break, 100 iTunes credits, Blu-ray player, PS4, TV/blu-ray player/speakers/PS3, Bike Lock, tix to Marc Almond, Bon Jovi, Charlatans, PiL & backstage with Peter Hook & Howard Marks0

How confusing - I suppose the ones that 'clip/twist' on around the back of the ear to hold in place are called 'over the ear'?0
-
They are On-ear or Supra-Aural.
There are three types of headphone:
On-ear /Supra-Aural - sit on the ear
Over-ear / Circum-Aural - bigger and sit around the ear so the ear is inside
In-Ear or IEM or earphone or earbud - in your ears (like the apple buds)0 -

No those are generally sports earbuds or if they are the full sized speaker (rather than in-ear) they're called clip-ons... yes, a little confusing!0 -
I'm slightly baffled by the confusion.
Over the ear = headphones that cover the ear (noise cancelling headphones)
On ear = headphones that clip on the ear or don't cover the ear (like them bluetooth head clip things and sports headphones and the old walkmen style)
In ear = headphones that plug into the ear (standard)0 -
Usually the WhatHiFi comps are much less ambiguous than this and have the answer somewhere on the site. I thought "on-ear" phones were the Dre-Beats style all the kids have, whereas these look as if your ear would fit completely inside the foam.0
