Keep Getting The Following Blue Screen Error Message

Keep getting the following blue screen message

'An error has occurred. To continue: Press Enter to return to Windows, or Press CTRL +ALT+DEL to restart your computer. If you do this you will lose any unsaved info in all open applications. Error: 06:0000:000000017 Press any key to continue.

Tried both them, returns back to Windows (Millenium Edition) for 5 seconds, then the error message again. Make matters worse I lost my smart restore disk, when I recently moved, so i need new one. Tried contacting Packard Bell web site but so far to no avail. My computer is Packard Bell I-Connect 1275 SN 007776020181 Any ideas anyone? as I desperately need to access some files on it to transfer to my new one.

Thanks Paul but as soon as I open a file the the error message appears, so I am unable to open anything from my Desktop!

I assume the error is exception 06 at 0000:000000017. If so, do you have the peripherals mentioned on the Microsoft site? If so, disconnect before switching on.

Failing that, can you connect disk drive as a 'slave' to your new computer and transfer the files you want that way?

I will disconnect everything and try starting up again and I will see if that helps me to access any files (cos at the moment, as soon as I try to open up anything it goes straight to error message, must be about 3 seconds!)

Is the error message as I have stated and, if so, do you have the peripherals mentioned on the Microsoft site?

There is a chance you have this Microsoft update in place Kb891711 (dated 8th of March). If so - you have to remove it from startup.

    Paul,

I do not have the peripherals mentioned on the Microsoft site (I have a Samsung Monotone Printer and do not have a scanner).

My apologies if I am sounding a bit thick (I am still getting to know Videoplus on the Betamax Video Recorder!) but how do I go about removing the Microsoft update from start up, cos as soon as I have active Desktop, it goes to this error message. which then means I can not open anything.
