OH wants an iPad, and could afford the newer model, just wondering if it's really worth it?

I don't think it is. There are some features added in that the iPad 2 doesn't have, but I didn't feel it was worth it to sell my iPad 2 and buy a new one (which is what I intended doing)
I recommended an ebuyer ebay new iPad2 one over the cost of an iPad 3 to my mum because neither of us could justify the extra cost.
Depends what you want. Do you want a shiny new model? and also bear in mind 8/10 months time or so a new one will come out anyway, maybe at that point I'd upgrade, but I just never felt that they pushed enough on the iPad 3, possibly because of Jobs dying, idk. Be interesting to see what the 4th is like.0 -
Cheers, saw someone say the same thing in another thread not long ago.0

To give the opposite opinion I'll say yes.
If I had an iPad2 I wouldnt upgrade because I dont think it is worth an extra £400 but I would (and did) pay the extra £70 if buying a first iPad.
It is notably faster than the 2 and clearly has a massively improved screen. Dont play games on mine at all but for watching movies or reading books/ news etc it makes a real difference. The only downside is that the battery takes much longer to charge (it last the same when running as the 2)0 -
For someone who already has the iPad 2, it might not be worth the upgrade but we were buying for the first time so thought it worth paying the extra for the iPad 3.
It is mostly used for playing games and reading books (Kindle app). Some browsing of the Internet. The screen definition is excellent. Mrs. mart44 is very pleased with it.Error! - Keyboard not attached. Press any key to continue.0 -
I had the original iPad (iPad 1) and it broke a few days before the iPad 3 was due out, so I waited and bought an iPad 3. I'm glad I did the screen is better than an iPad 2 and it's quicker; also since both were 3G versions the iPad 1 I could get a speed of about 4Mb using a Three Network Data Sim, on the iPad 3 I had over 9Mb the other day.
However, I wouldn't of upgraded from an iPad 2 to iPad 3 and I wouldn't of bought an iPad 3 if my iPad 1 hadn't broken. But if you're buying new or having to replace and older iPad, then I wouldn't buy anything but the latest version.0 -
I am but my own admission a tight git.
But if I was in the same position i would spend the extra £70.
The reasons being
1. The screen, The 3 is a dream, it is really outstanding.
"The 2048 x 1536 resolution on the iPad 3 is double that of the iPad 2 (1024 x 768) and it shows. The Retina display is extremely vibrant and is superior to the iPad 2 when displaying high-definition pictures and videos. One of the most noticeable features is the clarity of text – the lack of pixilation when reading e-books, web pages or zooming in on stocks is very impressive. Business users are also likely to find it far easier to read PDFs and edit documents on the iPad 3." http://www.itpro.co.uk/639772/apple-ipad-3-vs-ipad-2-head-to-head-review
2. The speed, the 2 is great but the 3 runs smoother.
"The iPad 3 comes with a bumped up A5X chipset, which introduces a quad-core graphics processing unit in addition to the 1GHz dual-core processor. There is now 1GB of RAM to allow the device to cope with more intense applications and to help render graphics that aren't too far off console quality." http://www.stuff.tv/news/apple-news/versus/ipad-3-vs-ipad-2?page=0,2
3. The battery a huge 11,666mAh battery means you can get 10 hours of regular use out of the iPad 3 (and a few more with connectivity turned off) That's alot for a tablet.
4. The camera The 5MP rear camera g is a big improvement – just beware, the Retina Display will show up your tablet snaps no end.
5. Its newer and shinier, well it feels "better" though this is hard to quantify. At a guess it could be as its a little heaver and the touchiness of the screen seems to work in a smoother and more concise manor. Though this is not to say the ipad2 is not exceptionable at such as it too is a great piece of kit.
Though in essence the choice is yours, my recommendation is academic as I can afford neither at this time. But I have used both for some time. Though I can always wish one day I will have my own.

Get the 3 because either you will become an apple addict and you will sell it on to get a 4 or 5 so getting most of your 70 quid back, or because apple will stop suporting the 2 sooner with new versions of iOS.
For example if you got a iPhone 3 in June 2010 (just before it was discontuned) from May this year you have not been running the latest iOS.0 -

Same machine in most respects - display resolution has quadrupled, but GPU power only doubled, main processor and other bits identical. If you like more dots on your small screen, then yes, if you don't then no, frankly. Depends how keen your eyesight is.
But then again, personally if I was spanking that kiind of cash I would get an awesome laptop plus an awesome ebook reader, both of which would outspec a tablet device in different ways. Remember they are currently a fashion item, but haven't really found a place in businesses. Before tablets it was all netbooks this, netbooks that, next it may/will be ultrabooks this, ultrabooks that... I am sure tablets have a place since I saw Bill Gates demo one over a decade back (they called it a 'slate' back then), but a lot are looking for a real use that other form factors don't do better (eg TV on the TV, ebooks on a Kindle, typing on a laptop)0 -
You will not notice much difference. I have an iPad 3 (upgraded from an iPad 2 as a present) and the screen is better, everything runs the same.
The battery life mentioned above is the same on the iPad 2, the 3 has a bigger battery in order to cope with the higher screen and faster processor and still give 10 hours.
However, give it a year and the iPad 2 will slowly not be able to keep up with the latest stuff as the processor speed is slower. Apple will not drop support for a couple of years.
What would I do? If I had to buy something new, I would probably buy the iPad 3. I wouldn't upgrade.0
