He also didnt pay the electrician so we have had to fork out £150 for an electric condition report that the building regs needed. We would like to chase the debt through small claim court, but I presume we need to chase the business rather than the individual. how do I know if they are still trading? If they are not do I have any other options?

If he is running a limited company, then the company number and VAT reg number should be on correspondance, as well as the name. You can search on the Companies House web site to find out the status. If he is a sole trader, then I am not sure, but if he did an extension my guess is he is a limited company as that is not minor work. Just a guess though.
