Builder disapeared -help

We recently had an extension completed but after final payment the builder has vanished, not answering calls, e-mails etc...
We have had to pay to get hold of the building regs direct but would like to try and reclaim some of the money.
I am not sure if the company is still trading. What is the easiest way to find out if they are still going?
Thanks

was builder VAT registered?
Maybe he is on holiday?0 -
why would you still need to get hold of the builder if the extension has been complete?0

Companies House website might be able to tell you if they are still trading?0

I need to get hold of them because they have not provided any certificates, building regs, completed any snagging etc...0

It is normal to withhold some money to cover such issues.0 -
Just go around to his house. You must have the address
You don't actually need a b/regs certificate as the details are still held at the council. But again, you can just ask them if you want a copy, and there should be no extra charge.
Other certificates can be got from the relevant certifying authority0 -

I would contact the building control to find oout if the builder has had the inspections carried out including the completion inspection - if so and if everything is ok they would be able to give you the completion certificate. Its quite likely that you may need an electrical certificate and a boiler certificate if you had either of these installed.0

I wouldn't ask if the builder has had the inspections done, I'd just ask for a copy of the Completion Certificate.

I have been in touch with the building regs company but although they have completed their inspections the builder has not paid them. He also didnt pay the electrician so we have had to fork out £150 for an electric condition report that the building regs needed. We would like to chase the debt through small claim court, but I presume we need to chase the business rather than the individual. how do I know if they are still trading? If they are not do I have any other options?
