Dial meters are are a pain in the butt - 6 Black dials & 1 Red - The classic c*ck-op is the one on the left which meaures 10,000 Kwh between increments

The customer and even meter readers will see the pointer sesting on,say 6, but dont realise that with the 1000 dial next to it, reading 7, 8 or 9, that reading on the 10K dial should be read as 5

yes dogshome, if a pointer falls on a border (or even near one ) the dial to the right tells you which side of the border it is on, if its before the zero its the lower, after the zero the higher. occasionallly I find all five pointers all on borders. The suppliers little diagrams explaining dial meters are pretty woeful and dont cover the real world of dial meters when pointers decide to align on borders. This is just a suggestion of the reason regarding the OP huge bill, and others have made valid reasons

It could be a pointer, but if the supplier can see firm readings with smaller advances and then a massive jump, they won't send the bill out without proving its valid use. If they suspect a faulty meter, they should pass it to a team working those issues who can contact the customer. Unless its been lots of underestimation, they are mad to send this bill out...instant complaint and even if its correct, they may throw compensation at it just to appease an angry customer.

There are lots of reasons from a billing perspective e.g. previous incorrect reading in bill hence a rollover now, billed on new meter when meter change not actioned, miss keyed reading by customer or supplier staff, energy recalculation by the agents (dummy meter changing or instance to correct post 14 month crystallised consumption in the current 14 month period) where supplier misuses data, high bill calculation by utilising high EAC/AA data, high Data Collector failed reading not checked properly, cocked up recalculated bill with or without all previous payments missing, correction of transposition, transposition in billing created etc...

Think the op needs to confirm things, as we are all just guessing
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
