Yes, sounds like a cashier error, but little you can do other than to pay it back. They realised their mistake and corrected it.

Calls are usually recorded to and if that is what he said then that surely is a verbal contract with the bank :-)

this happened with the abbey once. i put £1.50 and they credited my account with £150. this was on a friday morning. i was skint but waited til the monday after 5pm. it was still there...... so i withdrew.

never recieved a letter from the bank but as expected on payday they then reversed the transaction.
Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?

Keep the details of the call. You will need it as part of the complaint that is likely to follow.

You know you deposited £1.50. There is a piece of paper saying you deposited £1.50.

There has been an error caused by the bank. You should not be charged as a result of this error. You should be compensated for the error. Perhaps £20. Your credit file should not be affected by this.

But you shouldn't have the £150 reimbursed to the account.

The OP could give it a go by all means. My own view would be that the agent concerned isn't authorised to make such an agreement. If it was escalated to the FOS it would be interesting to know the outcome. A court would rely on the deposit split as evidence enough.

I'd love to be his boss. This chap is either undertrained or a cretin. Dealing with either cause would be fun!

Whichever it is the boss shouldn't be allowing him to deal with customers in the first place.

You will definitely have to pay it back. I would escalate it as a complaint and mention about you withdrawing the money as you thought it was something else rather than doing it deliberately.

Well it's all well and good saying that in hindsight...

And I'd say basically firing someone for one error is a tad harsh. It should be reaffirmed that they are never allowed to authorise such things and marked on their record (unless they've done this kind of thing before).

Is it a mistake that you thought the money was from an ex partner and spent it?
Is it a mistake that the cashier accidentally put too much money on your account?

The money is not yours and the bank has proof of your deposit receipt so you have agreed to that.

In my opinion this is a mistake not a complaint that can be corrected so relax and talk to them.
