Bailiffs at door but partner no longer lives here Help

Hello
can I please get some advice, my partner nearly 2 years ago got a fine for dropping a cigarette on the pavement, now nearly 2 years later I have had Marstons bailiffs at the door saying I owe them money, the original fine was £50, they now want £1200.
I have told them he no longer lives here, and hasnt for nearly a year. I have provided them with my council tax bill which is a single person.
I have spoke to the bailiff and advised him of this, he said he is giving me 24 hours and he will return, with police to check the house is actually just me and my daughter?
It took me a long time to get over my husband leaving, and now this is dragging it all up again.

So can they come into my house with the police? All i have for contact is his mobile number i dont have an address I think he is in Coventry, (I live in manchester).
They have also said that I need to have receipts for goods to prove they are not his. I am so confused and feel under so much stress about this.

Thank you in advance for any advise

    Hi

This sounds like High Court Enforcement Officers because they are allowed to add huge fees to unpaid fines.

This is totally unacceptable on their part.

I do not have long but:

They cannot break into your house regarding his debt.
They cannot take your goods to pay off his debt.

I think it might be an idea to ring National Debtline tonight to get some one to one advice, rather then just on-line.

The police should not co-operate with the request to visit the house but some bailiffs bluster enough that the police misunderstand their duties.

If They return lock all doors and call the police and ask them to remove an aggravated trespasser who is causing alarm and distress .
Once it established the person does not live there that is what he becomes, a civilian harassing you.
He is only a bailiff when acting under the court licence terms.

Isn't providing the bailiff proof of single occupancy proof he doesn't live there ?

You don't owe the money OP so don't be intimidated by this person, don't let him inside your property at all, lock all the windows and doors, and move any vehicle that outside as he may try and clamp it . I would suggest bailffadviceonline.co.uk , but please wait for some further advice here as there is a small charge for advice from them, they are very good though.

No, you don't owe them any money. He owe them money.

You have done what you can to prove that he does not live there anymore. If he threatens you again phone the police immediately yourself.

lock all your doors as they cant break in.
    they cant take your stuff
the police may attend to prevent a breach of the peace however they should know that the bailiffs have no power once its established that your ex partner doesnt live there

I can't really add anything to the knowledge of the law / bailiffs others have offered - but if they've given you a date / time when they will be attending then is there someone you trust who could watch your daughter for you? All this talk of breach of the peace, etc - even if it is fairly quickly resolved could be quite distressing for her.
