What can the Police log a complaint for?

I was under the impression that the police had to log complaints made to them for just about anything?

In this case it was the actions of an organisation that put the safety and security of my property and belongings in jeopardy. I have complained to the organisation but they are failing to take it seriously or act.

The Police advised that this is a civil matter by them but I have heard this 'blag' before on another matter that could be definitely logged with them.

Any help or assistance please? thanks

    Wow,

If the Police "had to" log all complaints that were made to them they wouldn't have time to do anything else....

Could you be more specific with the details of this incident and then perhaps we can point you in the right direction.

What exactly do you mean by "log a complaint"?

If you call and advise them of an issue, it will be recorded. If it is a civil matter, the record will be closed down as "advice given - not a police matter" or equivalent.

    thanks!

I mean log an incident and investigate really.

My housing trust placed a sticker over my front door lock and frame and I was away from home for a week.

This indicated sticker was even dated and an gave obvious indication that the property was empty.

I suppose for the Police to investigate it has to be a crime? Could this be classed as anything in particular?

Yes, the police will not investigate something where there is no indication of criminal activity, and I can't see anything here. I would put in a complaint to the housing trust, ask them to change their procedures to ensure it does not happen again. I would not expect anything more than an apology in return.

Have you spoken to the housing trust about this? It sounds like either a mistake or an ill-thought out practice that, once you bring it to their attention, they'll stop doing.

What do you want the police to do about it? I assume your house wasn't broken into, so what can they do to 'investigate'?

What crime exactly do you think has been committed here?

They can only investigate and take action in cases where they have legal powers to do so (ie someone has broken a law that they have a duty in law to enforce). It's irrational to think they will give a crime number and investigate everything and anything that is reported to them...how much tax do you want to pay to fund that sort of time/money wasting nonsense??

I have raised a complaint with the housing trust but they stand by this action and are continuing with it.

I've contacted the local Neigbourhood Police team now to see if they can explain the dangers their actions cause to the Trust and force a change.

They have acted in a 'couldnt care less way' more than once. So suppose I could always go down the road of harassment ie. causing alarm or causing distress and states that ‘a course of conduct’ must involve conduct on at least two occasions.

That all sounds very sensible. TBH, you've probably done as much as anyone could advise. It's certainly something that the neighbourhood team would be involved with, rather than something that's been reported as a crime.

AFAIK, the police do still provide a general service about crime prevention, e.g. supporting and encouraging neighbourhood watch schemes, running pushbike postcoding service, visiting schools etc. This kind of thing falls under this remit I guess.

Out of interest, what was the sticker for?

You could try but the chances of a harassment case being pursued is nil. You're more likely to end up as an example of people who waste police time than to ever see someone charged with an offence in relation to what you have described. Follow the housing trust's complaints procedure and then move on.
