As others have said it's probably your 3 way diverter valve that's stuck or is letting by or has a faulty motor.

Motors for certain valves can be replaced without touching your water but it's not always the best option if your valve is old, even if the motor is gone.

Have you got something that looks like this, probably in your airing cupboard?

    http://www.plumbworld.co.uk/honeywell-v4073a-3-port-763-1367

If it is the diverter valve , it will mean a drain down, replace the part, re-fill + inhibitor, bleed & test.

No more that 2 hours work for someone who knows what they're doing.

Maybe you could explain to the world, which part of that requires this response then:

No it won't if its only the head ...

    That's what I said wasn't it ?

You appear to be wriggling somewhat.

Perhaps you could share you experiences of replacing motors or heads and then being called back later because the valve has blown another motor ...

    How very MSE of you...

Hence my explanation that replacing motors is not always the best option.

    It's not always very MSE.

    Clear ?

Might not be a three way valve.

OP may have 2 x 2 port valve and the heating one stuck open.

If the rads are only getting hot when hot water is called for, my money will be on the valve body stuck and a complete new valve needed to be fitted.

Another possibility, if it's an old system with gravity hot water and pumped central heating, is the non-return valve on the central heating circuit having failed open letting the hot water flow through the heating circuit.

My central heating system is gravity hot water and pumped central heating, so not only doesn't have 3-port valve but also no non-return valve. The choices in the summer are
    1. Gas HW - hot radiators
    2. Gas HW - switch radiators off - some lock shield not working
    3. Immersion HW - Gas switched off

    thanks all...
it does look like there is a 3 way valve (infact it looks identical to the one Fed_Up_Tradesman linked to)..
doesn't look too hard to replace, drain water then 3 nuts..then fill up again?
but i'll try what's been suggested so far first..
    thanks for your help guys.
