Hi all,
We've just discovered that all (except 1) of our radiators are hot when the boiler is set to heating the Water (we put our boiling hot house down to the heatwave we're having at the moment)..
We have a Glow-worm Economy boiler..
anyone got any ideas?
thanks.

One possibility:
When we had this problem, our three-way valve needed replacing. It's a valve that controls whether the boiler heats the hot water, radiators or both. When old, they can fur up and start sticking. I seem to remember that the valve itself cost about £60. I can't remember what we paid for fitting as our plumber did it at the same time as some other jobs.
I'm not sure if all types of heating system have three-way valves though.0 -
As a temporary measure, turn the rads off at their valves.
As stated it is probably the Diverter Valve.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
thanks...
I've a guy coming to fit our cooker on Friday so i'll get them to take a proper look..0 -
My bet is on diverter valve too.0

thankfully it only comes on twice a day with the Water (for baths and showers)..
but i'm going to go and turn off all the radiators tonight.0 -
As others have said it's probably your 3 way diverter valve that's stuck or is letting by or has a faulty motor.
Motors for certain valves can be replaced without touching your water but it's not always the best option if your valve is old, even if the motor is gone.
Have you got something that looks like this, probably in your airing cupboard?

If it is the diverter valve , it will mean a drain down, replace the part, re-fill + inhibitor, bleed & test.
No more that 2 hours work for someone who knows what they're doing.0 -

OP if its one like has been described then take the head off and see if youi can operate the valve manually if you can easily turn then the head is suspecxt but if you can turn it then just turn it round to the point where the only DHW circuit is in operation and leave it like that if you don't fancy doing anything else 'til your man comes. That way you will save 3 days worth of gas if nothing else.
If you fancy having a pop at doing it yourself then come back here and we can talk you through it.

Did you read my post ?0

Yes of course but the advice that it will need a whole new valve is neither necessarily correct (even with a rider) nor is it particularly MSE.
