Went direct to Microsoft, downloaded 3 things and then done a restart. System is still showing a shield thing saying updates are ready for computer click to download
  • Switch off the auto updates - restart and then re enable. See if that does the trick.

Updates will normally tell you what they are doing. When you get the balloon window pop-up telling you have updates ready to install, do it but when it minimizes back to your system tray double click it to find out just what it is installing. I always got in the habit of keeping a close eye on what Microsoft was installing on my copy of XP. Doing this will also tell you if an update install has failed which you can then go and check up for yourself on the Microsoft knowledge base for answers. All updates have numbers assigned to them as well.

Also IF you are running a cracked up version of Windows or Office then updates will sit in your system tray and never install.

Of course you could always switch to Apple OSX and use a real operating system, that is what I will be doing in a month or so after my introduction to Windows Vista. Finally had enough of Microsoft.

Take a note of the kb article numbers, do a search for them on the microsoft site and then download each file to the PC and install each one individually.

daughters been using my sons PC for MSN while he is away, using Guest sign in. Decided I had better see if his Virus prot etc were up to date & noticed he had 58 Windows updates aswell. Closed PC down a couple of time before realised these updates were still to do. Had a fiddle around & it seems they can only/will only be done when someone with admin rights is logged on/logs off. Hopefully you are sorted by now anyway, but just saw your thread while searching for something today.
