Yes I suggested to avoid the other bike while he gets his one fixed, so he cancelled this so called courtesy bike as BLD confirmed this is a hire bike!
So we are now waiting for his bike to be collected on thurs.
Well done for checking and being without a bike is potentially far less hassle than having a credit hire agreement go pear shaped. Out of interest what was BLD's reaction when your BF cancelled the hire bike? I would think that they wouldn't be best pleased to lose out on one of their money earners.

Hopefully BLD will now have no incentive to drag out the repairs - this was the problem in our case and which is why the credit hire charges escalated. Fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly for you from now on.

    Thanks Nearly Old .
When we rang in the morning, he spoke to a different person on the phone, said he would like to cancel the hirebike but keep everything else the same , which is for his own bike still to be collected yday afternoon. The operator said they would pass on details to the lady dealing with the claim. This lady called us back in a few hours to ask why we are cancelling the hire bike, and then just said thanks for letting us know.
Im not sure if there was some misunderstanding but noone came to collect this own bike yesterday, my bf sat all afternoon at home waiting, calling them asking when they will be collecting, it felt they were being a bit ignorant, saying they will call us back.
Eventually at 5pm they apologised, giving the excuse their driver thought the whole thing was cancelled hence the reason he didnt turn up!! New collection date is thurs! Lets just hope they actually turn up!

I also thought that since we cancelled the hire bike, they may actually fix his bike a bit quicker, but who knows...the lady gave approx timescale of 1 week.

another reason for going through the other parties insurance as they will want to get it sorted asap.

Having the bike at a storage yard can help too. At your house storage is costign nothing a £25 a day charge gets them moving a bit quicker!

    Hope it gets sorted OP!

Hire charges like this cant be too bad really.

When we had our hire car through insurance I made a point of asking how much it was and was quite surprised to be told it was £17 a day. It only took 2 days to mend the car though. I was bothered about the excess on the car and it cost me £6 to insure against that. Money well spent for peace of mind.

Hope everything gets sorted soon OP
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

That £17/day rate looks to be a special arrangement between a hirer and an insurer (ie. The insurer has done a deal to use a hirer when supplying hire cars to claimants).

It is "credit hire" charges which gets people hot under the collar (where a car (equivalent model to the damaged one) is (swiftly) arranged by a claims handler through a credit hire company, in the knowledge their bill won't be paid swiftly, and consequently much more expensive)

As Quentin has noted there is generally a substantial difference between the hire cost of a car, particulary when it is provided by the other party's insurers and a credit hire car provided by an accident management company. In our 2 cases the daily credit hire charge was almost 8 times the rate of the car supplied by the other party's insurers. The credit hire supplied a BMW 330CI (our car was a BMW Z3) and the insurer provided a Fiesta; £300/day vs £40/day
