Plagued by flies

If they are not house flies you need to identify them first. But if they are I have a recipe for fly paper that might help getting rid of flies. I'll have to look it up but it's corn syrup on pieces of paper cut into strips.monicas0

We had a fly problem once that we were mystified by but later on a mummified pigeon fell down the chimney so we think that was the cause - any chance that you have a chimney that could need sweeping? You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0

Argh, no! You have reminded me of my worst nightmare which occurred a couple of years ago when I DID need to get the chimneys swept. Hordes of flies coming down my bedroom chimney, though not blue bottles, some different type. DISGUSTING!
I have had some success with a cheap bamboo curtain but a) it is noisy in the wind and b) it gets in the way of the cat flap! I too am looking round for a bargain version of the chain ones, bit reluctant to soend £80-90 on one!0 -
What about fly strips on the end of the door that you don't walk through? This might help for the flies and getting rid of them.monicas0

I also use a thin net curtain on the back door. I just have 2 hooks above the door and a thin pole in the curtain so it's easy to put up and take down as I wish.0

Hey Paddypaws, I could send my Chloe round, she is just the best fly catcher ever. Yesterday she was howling, and came into the lounge with a massive fly in her mouth (still alive, just) which she depositied as a gift for me!! She is also prone to eating them. Ugh. If I see a fly, I call her and she comes to wherever I am and gets on the case!! What a star she is!
You can go to bed with anything you like buzzing around in the lounge, guaranteed, it won't be there in the morning....
I hate fly paper, I just think it's really horrible and cruel.
When I was travelling we used to burn coils of incence to keep the mossies away, and indoors I find they aren't too keen on cones or jossticks either, or even when I burn oils (hippy that I am!)Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!0 -
You say you hate fly paper its cruel, what about the diseases they carry? A lot worse if you ask me, but to each his own. Flies, getting rid of them especially if you live in a farming community is very hard.monicas0

Honey this is a UK forum, we don't really have much of a problem with insect borne diseases here. Nor that many farming communities.

This magnetic mesh door screen solved the issue at a very MSE price indeed, a truly wonderful thing!
Juliebunny....thanks for the offer of a feline fly-catcher but I already have a couple of those myself and TBH being used as a launch pad by one or the other of them while they are in hunt mode is not the most pleasant thing!0 -
I've been plagued by flies this year- perhaps it is something to do with the weather? It's a rural market town and fields of cows & muck spreading are not far away...... Have just bought Rentokil Multi surface insect killer- £3.60 from Amazon. Flies eventually are drawn to the window where they will meet their doom-'cos there's a line of this insecticide round each pane.
Sorry, who said flies don't carry disease? I don't like to think where they have been wiping their feet!!
Have just looked on Amazon & they have rocketed in price- I only bought mine Aug 21st! having been unable to purchase in any local shopBeing polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
