Plagued by flies

Flies, and getting rid of them can be very tiring. Some people use the fly strips, you may want to hang one from the door, or close to it. Is there any way you can identify this fly?monicas0

If my back door is open I get flies come in on the air current, they don't ever come in through my patio doors and if the patio door is shut the incoming flies from the back door splat on them and leave brown dot marks before then going back and through the house. If the patio door is open the flies go straight out. It's like a motorway so I never open one door without opening another door to let them out.0

All these people getting flies!
I get barely enough to keep my resident spider fed.:D
It's web is on the window next to the back door so if any annoying flies come in I just shut the back door & the door through to the kitchen. Flies are normally gone within a couple of minutes.0 -
Flies in our house usually come in the back door and out the front windows.. I'm thinking of getting one of those fly screens for the doors you can also buy them for windows .

We have a thin curtain up at the back door which keeps the flies out but lets the air in.0

An interesting theory about a 'fly motorway', and yes, in my house they do get stuck in a cul de sac! I have a terraced house with tiny front garden, so to open the front windows would seem very risky in terms of inviting in passers by! I also worry that I would forget to properly lock the windows if I went out or up to bed, so not a risk worth taking for me.
As for the Fly Zapper....I did have one but a) it blimmin' hurts if you touch the grid yourself and b) smashing that thing around can cause a fair bit of damage it you are not careful, I prefer the basic fly swat with which I have a pretty good hit rate.0 -
I am finding this this year too , haven't had this many before. I am putting it down to our bins being collected everyother week now rather than weekly,as nxtdoor also said they have noticed rats recently in the gardens !! We have moved most of our bins as far away as possible. Flipping cat is asleep most of the time and not catching them.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0

When I fostered some ferrets, they lived in a converted summerhouse and they got the odd bit of raw food, chicken wings, etc. but I found in the summer, the raw meat attracted flies instantly - within seconds. My fix was to only feed raw later at night when it cooled down and there weren't so many flies about, and also to put the raw food into a wooden dog kennel they had situated in their aviary section. I hung a blanket in the doorway and the ferrets knew to slide in around/under it, but it fell back in place and kept flies out.
I've seen other ferret owners do similar with hooded cat litter trays, keep the raw food in there so that the door flaps shut behind the ferret and keeps the flies out. Perhaps you could do similar with their wet/raw food?0 -
Like POPPYOSCAR, I have a thin net curtain attached on the outside of the door frame and when the door is open, it stops a lot of the flies coming in but lets air in.
If you don't have one, there are often lots in charity shops. Mine is just hung on a piece of wire between two nails!!0 -
I'm also in a rural area with horses, cows, muck heaps etc close by, so yes, we get flies a plenty every summer. I saw a Kim & Aggie tip years ago where they stuck lengths of double sided sellotape to the windows in the worst affected rooms, with a tiny bit of honey smeared to attract the flies like a cheap fly paper. Seemed to work very well on the telly. This year I'm trying to find an affordable version of this flyscreen https://www.nisbets.co.uk/chain-door-fly-screen/F129/ProductDetail.raction as I've had success with cheapo beaded curtains in the past.0
