You could always redress the balance by using the self-scan service and only scan one item* when you buy two :rotfl:

Actually it's not, it's very easy.

Have you noticed that they will not begin scanning your items until you have them all on the belt? This is because they get timed, from the time they scan the first item until they scan the last item. So they won't start scanning until they know it's all on the belt and there is going to be no hold ups.

So play them at their own game, don't start packing your items until the last one has been scanned and you have checked the receipt.

That would hold up the whole queue though, why not just check your receipt after packing but before leaving the store then you can still stop at customer service if there's a problem?
  • I remember trying out Tesco for a while and finding that EVERY time I shopped there, I had a problem with them overcharging me. My dear grandma still shops there for some reason I cannot fathom and complains that she's had a number of problems with overcharging herself. Indeed, a number of people I know stopped shopping there because they were regularly being ripped off. I would hazard that the majority of people don't check their receipts and I'm convinced that this money guzzling corporation DELIBERATELY try and overcharge as much as they possibly can. They have shareholders to appease and profit margins to keep improving on. All i'd say is, please be careful and check your receipts.

So you think that tens of thousands of low-paid checkout staff are deliberately over-charging customers and this is forced by the company? Do you have any proof of this? I'd be interested to see exactly what convinced you so completely of this highly defamatory statement about tens of thousands of people.

i was in morrisons the other week and there was a pack of milkybar yoghurts on the side of the till, like in the middle next to the cashier.

he was scanning through my actual shopping then suddenly grabbed that and scanned it!

i said 'that not mine?!' and he was like 'oh i dont know where it came from...'

    strange.. :/

also at asda last week i saw the cashier put through 2 fish pies instead of one, but she looked at another meal and it was the same price so i assumed to make it easier she just didnt scan the other one.. checked my reciept and she had scanned it twice AND the other meal.

went to the cs desk and they refunded the £1 to my card and then gave me a £2 gift card! :)

    xx

Even more reason to either use the self-service checkouts or the hand scanner when doing shopping. So glad Tesco have introduced this now, far quicker & easier to do a shop even taking into account having several items of your trolley/bags checked :D

Actually roger didn't mention the checkout staff, you jumped to that conclusion.

It would be very easy for tesco to programme their tills to "scan" an extra item, either randomly or if specific circumstances occur. Such as when a certain number of items have been scanned, and the CA is scanning the items above a certain speed. The CA scanning a lot of items fast would probably mean a customer packing just as fast and not taking notice of what is being scanned.

If the customer does notice an extra item has been scanned they will assume the CA made a mistake, not that the computer had been programmed to do it. Just as you assumed it would be the CA when roger said "this money guzzling corporation DELIBERATELY try and overcharge". You automatically assumed that it would be the CA's doing it, not the computers.

I'm not saying they have programmed their computers to "scan" extra items, but if they have it would be almost impossible to prove, and most people wouldn't even think they have, they'd just assume it was a CA error.

Personally I only know the facts relating to the actual branch of the retailer where I shop. I have been overcharged at least 3 times in the last few months that I know of. I don't always check. I have never found myself having been undercharged. If I've discovered an overcharge before leaving the store then it is rectified as having been a "mistake". Possible reasons for the "mistakes" have never been given so I can only make an educated guess as to motives or incentives. Unofficial pressure to make good a stores wastages or other losses maybe? Obviously nothing would be found written down in any job description or training manual for cashiers or store managers.

So you have no proof, and it's just a wild conspiracy theory based on questionable evidence. I can't imagine why you continue to shop in the store if you are so convinced that they are stealing from you.

That's why self-scan tills weigh your shopping as you scan it. They can't tell the difference between Value and Finest though. :rotfl:

However don't get me started on self-scan tills ... the coin acceptors frequently don't register all my coins, and I know what I put in because I calculate what coins I need to get whole pounds in change.

The readiness with which the staff hand out £1 coins when I complain suggests that this is a frequent and known - to them - problem.
