I'm starting to wonder if this "problem" is widespread and most of us just aren't checking our bills in detail regularly. Since I started this thread 3 months ago I've had a quick glance at the itemised receipt each time I leave the store. Last week I had spare time after unloading the car so went through my bill in detail. I had been overcharged by £1.98p. I had 2 mini salamis but had been charged for 3. I had 4 packs of wafer-thin meat all with "30% off" stickers on. I was charged for 3 at the discounted price plus another 2 at the full price.

Are some cashiers and/or store managers operating an unofficial policy of clawing back losses due to shop lifting and wastage by deliberately adding items to customer's bills?

If customers gets caught shop lifting the police are called. If a store deliberately overcharges a customer and the customer notices before leaving the store, then a refund is given to cover what the store will say has been a "mistake". Seems like the odds are all stacked in favour of the shops.

The BIG supermarket SCAM? Just like with the banks?

there was an earlier one which stated they would only start packing until all goods had gone through the checkout and they had checked the receipt.

There was not such a post, no poster in this thread has ever said they do that.

I also happen to think that is excessive if there is a queue of people behind.

And the CA sitting waiting until you have loaded your shopping onto the belt before they start scanning is not excessive?

I work in a supermarket, and we dont have scan rates, we do wait until people have all their items up sometimes as some customers dont like it when shopping is piled through before they can get to the packing (we do pack the majority of customers bags for them). When we were a former supermarket we did have scan rates, i know other supermarkets do have them too but not all, and me for instance i really dont like my shopping being put through before i can start packing.

I don't mind what order my shopping is scanned / packed as long as it's done quickly! I hate those people who continue packing in a leisurely fashion once everything has been scanned through. They carefully place each item in their hemp bags, making sure it's neat and tidy whilst the cashier and next customers silently watch. When they feel ready they turn to the cashier and FINALLY get their wallet out to pay :rotfl:. Bonkers

When I've paid, I ALWAYS move out of the way (usually to an empty till station) and carefully check my receipt. 9 times out of 10 there is a problem, even if it's only a 20p problem, and I pop over to customer services to fix it. Why should the Supermarket have 20p extra of my money??

But there was one poster that suggested that you should do it. Which one was it? Hang on, I'm sure I can find it somewhere....
    ...
So play them at their own game, don't start packing your items until the last one has been scanned and you have checked the receipt.

Exactly, but suggesting someone else do it IS NOT stating that I do it.

I've just come home from Spain, and in one supermarket I went to they had those split areas after the till, allowing one customer to continue to be pack whilst the last is served. The nice touch was that if you were bogged down in packing and not ready to pay, the assistant was able to start up another transaction and serve the next person (or persons), and come back to you when you were ready. I remember when tills here used to be like that.

I like Aldi, that always moves fast even with a long line. Just be prepared!

On the matter of wrongly scanned items, I'm surprised how many supermarkets have the display showing the items being scanned turned away from you. Great - everyone waiting in line can see what you're buying, but not you whilst you frantically pack...

Last week, I found an entry on a receipt for just "cheese". I hadn't bought any cheese. I usually get it elsewhere, as it's cheaper and stronger. And the price was far too low for cheese. Then I remembered the cauliflower cheese I'd bought.

It's asda using "4" to indicate eggs on a reciept that gets me! Have they changed that yet?

You say 9 times out of 10 there is a problem. If that's always in the store's favour by various amounts then that is an even worse scam than I feared. Haven't you reported these facts to your local Trading Standards for investigation and possible prosecution of the store?

If this is happening across the nation then the supermarkets are as bad as or even worse than the banks at ripping customers off!
