Slugs - yuck !

I've bought some climbing french bean plants to dig in but my garden is full of slugs. I've tried and failed with egg shells, copper, can't use pellets because of cats, birds and hedgehogs. Can't face disposing of dead slugs from a jug of beer every morning.

Do you think a thick mulch of wood bark chip stuff would stop the slimey little blighters crawling their way across to munch on my prize beans ?

Thanks

Miss H

I have used grit around my plants and seems to work.

Nope, they will live in it.

    Try the organic slug pellets.

I have come across "Nemaslug slug killer". It uses microorganism to kill the slugs and seems pretty safe for the animals. I think I am going to use it after my kittens are allowed to go out.

Since I haven't use it before so I would appreciate if someone who share their experience!

I do a similar thing and on wet nights go out armed with a torch and a pair of scissors and chop them up.

The first night about 2 months ago I got about 200 and the next about 100 now I only ever find a few small ones. In total I've been out about 6 times and I have no slug/snail problem and have the satisfaction of knowing I have applied no toxic chemicals or poisons to the veg plot. I use scissors as it easy to snip them in half if you find them on a plant rather than trying knock them off and squashing them or touching them.

i use disposable gloves to handle them and use an old ice cream container with soapy water. i think this method is the best chemical-free way

"Nemaslug slug killer" works really well.

It's price is what puts me off buying it again for my allotment.

If you weigh up cost of lost plants/stress it's probably worth it. I am a bit of a miser though.

There's supposed to be a way of making your own. It involves lots of dead slugs and a pinch of the nemaslug stuff.

What do you do with snails? Just crush 'em? I don't like the sound!
