Hopefully someone can offer some advice, I am currently with lv coming up for 2 years. The insurance is up for renewal 9th June.

We decided to get rid of our car and get a new (used) car. So that went on Monday and since I shortlisted 3 cars to replace it, I check the best price for renewal none of which is cheaper with lv, so I rang up to ask them not to renew.

I put a deposit on a car yesterday, to be picked up Monday. I rang lv to change vehicle on insurance but they tell me they can't change the vehicle as it shows on the computer as not being renewed so can't make changes to it. But my ncb won't change to 3 years until 9 th June so really dont want to start a new claim as I will have to put I only have 2 years no claims and that will add extra cost and I have 3 years :(

What do I do for this next 10 days . How can I pick the car up from the dealer? any advice would be great thanks

Can't you leave it until 9 June to pick up? Use public transport in the meantime.

Well if there is no other alternative I will have to do that, but that means been without a car for all of the half term :(

So annoyed with lv because I am still insured with them till 9th June so I should be able to change the vehicle whether I am renewing or not

does the dealer you are purchasing from not offer the free 7 day drive away insurance from aviva (from memory), you have to get a quote of them but at least you could pick the car up on the 2nd June and use the 7 day free insurance until your insurance is due for renewal and then get quotes from other insurance companies based on 3 yrs no claims rather than 2....

We had to go this route when we boought our new car a few weeks back, took about 10-15 mins on the phone to get the free insurance and the documents were faxed to the dealer virtually straight away so that the could tax the car.

Brilliant idea, pay tax & insurance, buy a new car and then because of an awkward insurance company use public transport. :rotfl:

OP, if the only reason they are refusing the change is because you are not renewing than that strikes me as unfair.

I think I'd be inclined to ring and talk to their complaints dept and see if you can get the decision overturned with the (implied or explicit) threat that if they don't you will refer to the FOS.

    Some other thoughts....

It's messy because if you have disposed of the old car and they have refused to cover the new one then there is nothing for the old policy to cover so it should be cancelled thus losing a years NCB and maybe charges

You probably have 3 year NCB noted on the renewal paperwork but if you used that to take out a new policy the same NCB would be being used on two policies (abet briefly). Could be trouble

If the old car was sold rather than scrapped then your insurer (& you) are at risk of RTA claims if the new owner hasn't insured it. Does LV know you have got rid of the old car? If not you must tell them ASAP

They say because it is showing as cancelled renewal from 9th June they can't make any changes to the policy. I said surely I am still insured with them up infill the 9th June so surely I can make any changes to the policy up until then, but she said the computer won't let her make any changes.

She advised me to start my next insurance policy early and she will send me out proof of 3 years but I know how insurances will use anything to get out of paying up and I don't want 12 days to void my insurance, she said if the new insurance company ask they will say that there is 3 year on renewal, but I really don't want to say I have 3 years when I don't technically until 9th june.

:beer:My Wifes Insurance was is Due 2nd of June, LV were lowest quote.
Thank you so much for tipping me off about this company.
I have decided the £15 saving is not worth the hassle you are having, heaven forbid what would they be like if we had to claim, when they start like this over a car change.

Talk to the complaints dept, get them to issue the notice of three years NCB and cancel the old policy.

That way, you have a bit of paper that says 3 yeas NCB and it's not being used on another policy so you can happily take out a new policy using it

This would also protect you and LV from RTA claims if your old car is being driven uninsured rather than converted into beans cans

If you scrapped the old car. when you tell them they will cancel the insurance, charge a cancellation fee, and issue you with 2 years ncd, as you will not have earned the full year this year.
