I think a lot of the Santander negativity stems from UK consumers being effectively 'forced' to bank with them (though they could have obviously moved their accounts when the takeovers started). When one bank takes over several different others, there's bound to be errors and problems, plus all the usual day-to-day errors and problems that all banks have to deal with.

Were there that may errors when the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation took over Midland? No.
Were there that many errors when Lloyds merged with Trustee Savings Bank? No.
Were there that many errors when Royal Bank of Scotland took over Natwest? No.
How about when the Bank of Scotland and Halifax merged? No.
Admittedly there were some minor issues when Lloyds Banking Group integrated their banking systems into Halifax Bank of Scotland but on a massively smaller scale.
And Nationwide managed to take over all those smaller building societies without so much issue.

Besides which, the nature of complaint uphld against Santander tends to be of a much more serious nature than those upheld against other banks. Breaches of DPA being rife within the organization.

You're right in what you say re: most complaints being about internal policies but that counts true with most banks. People will complaint when the bank acts according to their own terms and conditions but the customer has failed to understand their part in the contract they've entered in to.

But Santander is the bank to have been subject to a plethora of complaints over and above such minutia.
