Can I get out of new BT contract?

A couple of weeks ago BT called and offered me a bigger broadband package if we stayed with them for another year. I didn't have any plans to switch at the time, so I said yes.
Since then, unexpected financial problems have occured and we need to cut outgoing wherever possible. Someone's suggested to me to try pipex, who appear to offer a much better deal for unlimited broadband plus free calls. It would save me quite a bit of money per month (assuming there are no hidden catches) so obviously i would like to switch if at all possible.
It would be different if i was getting anything close to the 'up to 8 mb' promised, but it's holding at a steady 2.5 and bizarrely actually seems to be even slower than at the old 1.6. I only agreed over the phone, but I understand that this is still considered legally binding.
So my question is, bearing in mind my dissatisfaction, is there any way to legally get out of this?

I think you will find BT totally unhelpful if you have signed up to a new contract. When I wanted to switch to a different internet supplier and said that I hadn't signed anything, I was told that if I did not pay my bill until my contract ended, they would take me to court! Such great customer service!!!!0

unfortunately with broadband a majority, if not all, of the contracts are based/founded on verbal agreements!0 -
Your only hope is if they weren't keeping to their side of the deal.
You say you are dissatisfied, but only say this in relation to the speed you are getting.
But they only offered you "up to" 8 mb - which was the deal you accepted.
You cannot use this as a reason to scrap the contract.
If there are no other complaints you are stuck with this contract - or face buying yourself out of it, though this is probably out of the question because of your current financial problems.0 -
Thanks all, looks like we will be sticking with them- haven't had any problems with connection or anything, so I will just be thankful for small mercies.0
