The 'cold caller' doesnt care less if the receiver is interested or not or winding them up or not. They're just sat on their !!! calling people.
That's unlikely to be true. Even if they are not being paid on the basis of the number of people they sign up they will be performance assessed on that basis.
If someone has the time to stand there for half an hour and 'waste their time' then they need to question what they are doing with their lives.
Half an hour may be a bit much but after getting calls from the same outfit every few days for some weeks I started asking them to wait while I called the person they asked to speak to (myself, of course). I'd put the phone down and yell my name, and after a minute pick up the phone and say; "he's just on his way".

The calls stopped after I did that three times.

It is the mentality of 'I will waste their time' that makes me laugh. The 'cold caller' doesnt care less if the receiver is interested or not or winding them up or not. They're just sat on their !!! calling people.

As has been mentioned, the firm is paying their wages or salary. They are also probably on some kind of commission as well. If the business finds they are paying too much for each call then they will stop, not when people hang up and they move on quickly to someone else who may give them money and therefore cover the businesses costs.

I applaud the OP for giving up their time to stop other people having their time wasted.

To be fair to op you can't ignore these calls, you don't know it's a cold call unless you answer the phone
The employee probably doesn't care if you are interested in what they have to say or not, but they are interested in making sales targets, conversion rates, call stats etc, they individually will be performance managed on this.
The company who promotes cold calls will also be put out... The more people who take up their time not being interested in their product means they have less time to talk to people who may be interested, thus greater cost base and less profit
If everyone did this there would be no profit in cold calling and it would soon stop.........and also it is quite nice to inconvenience them for a change, if you have the time why not :-)

You are taking this way too serious. I kept her on the phone for my amusement, her fannying around trying to dodge my questions was highly amusing.

As for having to question what i am doing with my life, don't you think thats maybe a little insulting? What are you actually insinuating? Oh, and i wasnt standing, I was sat on the couch drinking a cup of tea waiting on my wife and kids coming home.

At the end of the day, they had call charges for half and hour and had no result at the end of it.

Saying that she probably just done the survey for me answering yes to everything so i'll get every company on their survey calling me now lol.

    Don't be so naive!

Firstly many of these call centers are not in the UK so a national minimum wage may not even be in place.

Secondly, they will have targets to hit so wasting their times will affect them and their ability to hit commission!

Lolz at all these replies. Cold calls-if you don't want them then be careful who you give your number too. Then again if you don't want them don't answer the !!!!in phone. Maybe someone one day will learn.

That doesn't stop the random number generators, also for those who don't have caller display how do you know if it's someone you want to speak to?

for free where as she earnt her minimum wage. Im not being difficult but if noone answered these calls they would not happen so you;re not helping the situation.

Ultimately that's true, but I think it's unlikely that everyone will simply stop answering these type of calls. There must still be money in it; they're too prevalent for there not to be.

There's also a school of thought that, if you're confident that you'll never be sucked in yourself and you're game for it, why not keep them on the phone for ages? It prevents them making a call to someone more vulnerable.

My mentality is obviously different to everyone else's.

My landline is not used, it is only active for my internet connection. Why use a landline when most mobile contracts are free for unlimited calls or at least a large number of minutes? Considering this is a money saving expert I am shocked at how many people actually use their landline.

Incidentally as I have stated in the past, when I did use my landline rarely I never got any of these types of calls. it is not a coincidence that I never used my landline number online or for any reason and therefore got no calls....
