smartphone newbie with questions :)

I'm going to get my first smartphone and was hoping to get some (probably silly) questions answered.

If i buy a payg phone from, say, Virgin Mobile, do i then also have to get a sim from them too? Their payg phones come with £10 pounds of airtime, so i take it you just use up that and then choose the payg sim only deal from Virgin that you want?

I've also seen a phone on play.com which is "sim free and unlocked". Does unlocked mean you can get a sim from any company you like? I take it that's all above board and kosher? :)

cheers for any help

Sim free and unlocked means you can use it with any network. I'm not sure that Virgin phones are locked - quick search should answer that though. If they are locked then you would need to use their sim or find a method/pay someone else to unlock it.

I didn't even know you could get new unlocked phones! It's a new phone so who's unlocked it? Play.com? And doesn't that void the guarantee?

So if you get a sim free phone from Amazon or Phones4U, for example, how do you know which providers' sim cards will work in it?

    Completely confused!

Yes, 'unlocked' sounds a little confusing. In fact this can mean 'not locked' too, i.e. that nobody locked it.

With any. That said, even PAYG and contract phones from P4U are normally unlocked.

No ones unlocked it as such, it's like that from the factory, only phones bought from the networks directly are locked.

Sim free/unlocked phones will work with any networks sim card.
