MSE News: Jobless get walloped when buying insurance

Hi all,
I'm having a nightmare with this price increase for being unemployed. My lowest price is coming out over £340 yet my old job brought them up as low as £220...
I live in a decent area, no claims, convictions and 16 yrs NCB.
What I find difficult is that I have had contract jobs that last a short period of time, working in IT this is often the way. I have been unemployed for a few months now but may get something again next week, I don't know.
Putting unemployed I assume by default my quote wouldn't cover commuting? But when I get another job I would have to phone up, get charged an admin fee for changing my policy etc. (which will eat into any rebate I might get).
It seems silly somehow to select commuting to or from work if I'm unemployed?
Also, what if I got a job for three days at the time of renewal? Like a temp job?
It just seems really vague the whole concept as it doesn't account for long or short term unemployment or people that do lots of different short term jobs, e.g. IT contracting?
I could say I work in IT support or self employed or something.
With money extremely tight at the moment £300 is hard to find so if I can save anything I will do.
Also I'm curious to know if the insurance companies check the vehicle or driver's licence which I have only just amended with DVLA. If they would have checked it would be at my old address so wondered if it may have caused issues with quotes if they were unable to find me or my car at my address to verify the details?0 -
I was researching home insurance when I came across this discussion and it strikes me that something more is going on with this I would not be surprised if these insurance companies are thinking that if they can dissuade people from getting car insurance for a couple of years then there back at square one when it comes to discounts. These people in my opinion are as devious and underhand as any criminal.0

Ah yes, because it makes perfect sense for insurers to want people to be inexperienced on the roads - doesn't increase the risk at all :money:All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.0 -
Your comments about unemployed are quite interesting but here's a fact some of the biggest crook's I know are independent finical advisors and quite few of those who are not don't even get involved in signing on or paying taxes. Just for clarity these idiots trust me I thinks my disgust for West Yorkshire police you see a lot when your not drunk.0

I think your missing the point of my post I have 20 years driving experience but because I could get insurance for the last two years I've lost all my no claims it's ridicules when you consider how long it takes to build it up. The whole system is a joke and could do with a lot more transparency as specially as some people have no choice its essential for there work.0
