The problem is, no-oneknowsme, that not all of the callers will take that as an answer.

I had one knock my door before my business picked up. I kept telling him I had no income whatsoever for him to reply "so i'll put you down for £2 a week then?". Which bit of no income whatsoever did he not grasp?
You both have the option of opening the door and politely saying "thanks for calling but I am not in a postion to offer donation at the present time"!

    How hard can that be?

Read my original post then say "thanks for calling but I am not in a postion to offer donation at the present time". Do this repeatedly until you realise being polite isn't going to do anything.

    I am absolutely fuming!!

How dare Cancer Research send salesmen to my door bombarding me with sales patter (or trying to) wanting to get me to donate money and sign up to a Direct Debit!

Chill out!!!!! It's perfectly legal and the 'salesman' was doing nothing wrong. He/she was simply doing his/her job.

You might not like it but there's no need to get so angry about it!! :rotfl:
I am employed as a manager in a financial services institution. My views are entirely my own.

"sorry, I am not willing to hand over my details to anyone at my door" and close the door simple, instead you're bemoaning your own inability to close the door.

Believe it or not cancer research do not get anywhere near enough donations - the problem is that while a great many chuck the odd few quid into buckets only a tiny minority actually regularly contribute. While I do appreciate that it's not pleasant to answer the door if you're in a position where such a thing is difficult (as the OP is) all you had to do was say no & close the door. The person doing this is probably used to it, because I'm willing to bet that of all the homes in your street, almost all of them did that.

Or if you really have difficulty in getting to the door "NO COLD CALLERS" write it on a piece of paper exactly as it is there & people will generally get the message.

I know how you feel, after an exhausting day at work one Christmas many years ago I had just gotten home, pretty much fallen asleep on the sofa when someone came knocking on my door. I kept telling him no but somehow ended up giving him my details!

The problem was I had always intended to donate to this charity but not until after Christmas (I had just turned 18 so wasn't able to before) The guy at the door promised the money would not come out until January but surprise surprise the money came out a few days later and sent me over my bank limit. Cancelled the DD the next week and never gave to that charity because I am so angry they allowed this to happen!

I have since found the best thing to say to them is I already donate to that charity. 9 times out of 10 they go away.

If you just try to focus on the fact that they are merely salesmen - nothing more, nothing less you'll find it much easier to say no. I find any door to door selling most annoying, just as I don't like them trying to stop me in the town centre on a daily basis. For what its worth, I think they should be forced to declare who they really are before the sales patter/emotional pressure starts. They should state who they work for, how much commission is paid and how much the charity will actually get. Then people can make an informed choice without getting duped.

I agree with the OP on this one. In my 36 years I've lost several good friends, 3 Grandparents, 3 of 5 Aunts/Uncles and my Dad from cancer. My Mom had breast cancer in 2007, a mastectomy and is currently awaiting results for further signs. My partner has had to have treatment for cervical cancer on several occasions. I've provided care for my Dad, Mom and supported my partner. Like many others I've grown up watching my loved ones dying from cancer, from a very early age. I get it, I really do.

I am quite capable of supporting a charity, and I do any chance I can, without the pressure of feeling harrassed on my own doorstep. Maybe if they got rid of the door-to-door people they could put their salaries back into the research pot?

    Well said. My thoughts exactly.
If my posts have random wrong words, please blame the damn autocorrect not me :D

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/protect/2012/05/mse-poll-reveals-which-companies-ignore-no-cold-callers-sign

Charities, religious groups and political parties are among the worst offenders of organisations that ignore 'no cold callers' signs, a MoneySavingExpert.com poll has found.
The survey, which saw over 1,600 users vote, names charities as the worst culprits, as 42% of those polled with a sign said they recevied an unwanted knock.

    as for not enough donations;
could it be there collection methods are actually harming their reputation?
or that there seems to be as many cancer 'charities' as people in the uk means that you dont know which ones are real
or that people are giving more to charities that show real progress in their area

Maybe if someone in your close family gets cancer you may change your attitude!

Cancer is a serious illness which effects many many people and the effects are not only felt by the person suffering from the disease but their family/friends also!

My Mother is having a horendous time with cancer and I for one think that the cancer charities do a wonderful job with their fundraising etc.

to be perfectly blunt it is reading posts such as yours that makes me fume. Not the fact that you were disturbed by a caller at your door and had to spend a few minutes listening to a salesman!

If only cancer lasted just the few minutes that you have wasted dragging yourself to the door and then coming on here to post [STRIKE]moan[STRIKE] about it![/STRIKE][/STRIKE]

I'm curious as to what you think that these door collectors do that benefits the charity.
These canvassers are paid minimum wage, plus commission. Commission is usually equal to anything from 6 months to 2 years worth of donations. And if the person donating cancels their DD after say 3 months, the canvasser still gets their full commission.
I donate to several charities, some which have been involved in things important to me, and some that haven't, either way, I'm intelligent enough to decide when I wish to donate to charity, how much I wish to donate, how often I wish to donate, and who I wish to donate to. I also like to donate to charities that I know will be using my donations towards charitable activities etc, not going towards paying ridiculous amounts to chuggers.
If you truly support a charity, you will know that in the long run, these chuggers will have a negative effect on the charity's reputation. People will associate the charity with chuggers, being harassed, and spending donations on unnecessary expenses

I had the misfortune of having an expereince day with the *insert derogatory expletive here* people that do this. They had a whole sales plan for bullying people into "donating". They don't give a stuff about the charities they're just doing it to make money for themselves and the way they treated vunerable people (like an elderly lady who they bullied into signing up) was disgusting. And i've had 2 people close to me die of cancer and i still think its out of order to collect in this way. Would much rather donate on my own terms.
