MBNA only wants you money, not your business

I am massively unhappy with MBNA, they must be the worst bank in the world to deal with. They do not care about their customers, they just want to take every cent you own and more. I had a nil balance and cancelled the direct debit because I had asked for the account to be closed. They tried to take over £100 even with a 0 balance, now they have charged me £12 for this rejected direct debit, even though there is nothing owing on the account. They now refuse to refund it. They have no desire to do anything helpful, they obviously have no soul.

Over many years I've made one or two banking mistakes, it's quite easy if life is keeping you preoccupied, and every time Lloyds TSB have kindly helped me out. Not MBNA. This isn't the first issue I've had with them. I will never deal with them ever again. I would never have dealt with them in the first place if I knew they were Bank of America.

The infinite irony is that governments had to bail them out because they lost ALL their money, not because of a mistake, but because of infinite greed, and they don't give one single sh*t about helping their customers, even after they have fleeced them.

I implore you to never deal with them.

    Thank you.

But over the last 10 years or so I have had no problems with MBNA and some of the best deals I've had I got from them.

Personally I'd never sign a DD though. Constant threads from people getting into trouble with them. You really have to understand how they work. I suspect here the statement said that a DD would be taken and you subsequently made a manual payment. Unfortunately this doesn't stop the DD that is already in train. Your story is yet another reminder - but personally my anger would be directed at the DD system, not MBNA.

If you are so happy with Lloyds TSB, why don't you have their card?

That is why I manually cancelled the direct debit, so they didn't take £116 pounds, but now MBNA refuse to refund the returned direct debit fee, even though I didn't owe them any money. That is all on MBNA, not the dd system.

Yeah.. but did you just cancel it with your bank without telling MBNA?

If you cancelled with MBNA and they accepted that, then I agree that it's gone wrong here.

If it says on your statement that a payment will be taken by direct debit - then it is always taken - regardless of what payments are made between the statement date and the DD date. That is detailed in their T&Cs.

Cancelling the DD (with the bank) was not the way to deal with it. You could have contacted MBNA to cancel the dd - providing it was in sufficent time (so more than a couple of days before).

It's all irrelevant, they weren't owed any money. I don't even know why I bothered posting this. People always seem to side with the corporations when there's an unhappy customer. Even if the banks have ruined our economies.

All I want to share is that MBNA won't do you any favours and will always find some fine print excuse to get out of helping you out for even the smallest issues. The only power we have as consumers is to take our business where it is appreciated, and that is not with MBNA.

Where did you manually cancel the DD, with your bank or with MBNA?
As stated on MBNA's credit card statement:

Please remember, your regular Direct Debit payment will always be taken, regardless of any additional payments you chose to make.

When the invoice gets compiled, your regular DD has been set in motion and it will go through regardless, unless it is manually pulled out of the system. To do this, MBNA needs your request and they need at least five (maybe even more) working days before the DD is due. If you've failed to inform MBNA, giving the required notice, you have only yourself to blame.

    I presume, you can read.

This is just plain wrong. The majority of people here post impartial views and advice.

Some of the people who come here looking for advice have made a mistake and are looking to blame the bank. They do not want or like to hear that it is their mistake. ~ but it is the truth.

For future reference, banks do have some discretion in charges if you make an occassional mistake. The best way to achieve this is to acknowledge with customer services that you made the mistake.

I feel very sorry that you feel like this regarding MBNA. But as previous contributors have said they will always take the DD irrespective of what manual payment you make. However in the past when a manual payment has been made I have phoned them and provided you give them sufficient notice they can stop the DD being taken for that month.

I must have held the MBNA AX for about 10 years and have never, ever had any issues. For me they are one of the cards to hold.

I am only going by my own experience as you are.

Same, I have been using their card for years without any problem.
Many people end up paying charges because either don't read the terms or don't understand how credit cards work. The OP is a good example.
