Late payment fee?? On visa card

My wife checked her visa account to find a late payment fee of £12 had been added . She always pays off regular as clockwork
Statements
29 march......... min payment by 23 April.(less than £10)
27 April............ Min payment by 22 may.( min£7.61)
She paid £150 on 03 April
And then paid £150 on 27 april
The bank said that the second payment counted to the 29 march statement .......how can this be the case when she paid on statement date and after the pay by for the march statement.....anyone got any answers thanks.

  • Unfortunately it appears that she made the second payment too early. Suggest that she contacts her provider and explain what has happened. They may waive the fee if she's polite and apologetic.

Usually a statement includes transactions upto and including the statement date.

So both the payments were included on the 27 April statement and the balance would have reflected that. The £7.61 minimum would then be calculated based on this balance - and this was due by 22 May.

Did you check the 27 April statement? Were both payments there?

I thought this might be the the case, only thing is the statement 27 apr is the same date as the payment, which shows this is the case online., I will get her to talk to them and see what they say.
    Thanks

Yes the payment appeared on the 27 apr statement, I guess that is where the crossover from 1 month to another should be checked carefully, she's paid the min now to cover it and see what they say in the morning

Just out of interest, do you know why the statement date has changed from month to month?

Yeah, it's weird. For some of my CCs, the statement date walks around quite a bit. For others it's almost always exactly the same date.

I expect they will say it is something to do with banking days/weekends etc etc.

If this is a "first offence", I would suggest your wife calls them up and ask if they would refund the penalty. It is clear from the account history what has happened and they haven't really incurred any cost as a result of this minor breach.

Barclaycards statements are based on XX working days from the beginning of the month, so depending on weekends and bank holidays, the actual days could vary by several days month to month

If its the first time they will normally refund the £12 LP fee.

missus called them and they have refunded her the £12, she struggled to get a proper explanation from the call centre(India) of why a payment can show the same date as the statement and not be accounted for against the min pay by date. She has now decided to close the card on clearing it this week, in light of not the hassle with the call centre and vague answers.

Just remember that won't be the last payment to the account -

Once the balance is cleared there is residual interest to be paid the following months' statement. You may already know this but many get caught out :o
