Windscreen chip

Just noticed a chip on passenger side of windscreen of my car.

Only bought the car 5 days ago in a private sale. I transferred my insurance from old to new vehicle. Can I get it repaired on my insurance or will they say it was there when I bought it?

I did inspect the car before buying and since getting it home but didn't notice it so it may have happened in last few days.

They might think that it was there already, so you may wish to consider leaving a few more days to elapse before claiming. Out of interest, I've just renewed with Admiral and see that they now charge an excess for windscreen repairs - may be worth checking your policy to see if the company you're with does similar ...

How does it work repairing a chip?

    They won't question it.

    Just get it fixed.

Extremes of temperature may increase the size of the chip/crack in the current weather.

The answer is "it doesn't always work".

Basically a transparent resin is forced into the chip under a pressure cup. It glues the star crack together and fills the surface which is then polished up. The idea is to remove the stress point whilst improving visibility through the screen.

I've only had 2 done, 1 on mine and 1 on the wifes car, ok they didn't develop into cracks but the improvement in visibility was marginal and thats being generous.;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

    Do you have windscreen cover?

Don't forget to mention, if applying for insurance from another provider, that you have had an accident/claim. Fortunately windscreen claims don't affect your NCB already earned, but you still need declare them.

Re the benefits... My car had a huge windscreen chip when we bought it (from a dealer). Dealer did a repair which improved it drastically. Fully expected it to crack at some point but it's lasted 4 years so far...

Before contacting your insurer, check how much a local independent will charge for doing a repair.

If you do use your insurance, you will likely have an excess, as well as a claim to declare for the next 3 to 5 years (depending on the length of history asked for) - which can mean a premium loading being more expensive than a "private" repair!

It is accepted by the insurance industry that chip repairs prevent replacement windscreen costs.

There is no claim to declare - that is stated in T&Cs. It will not be recorded on any shared database.

Insurers who include windscreen chip repairs do is a risk reduction.

Some insurers are dropping this cover or adding an excess to prevent drivers from getting every little chip repaired however. This is probably partly down to less competition in the windscreen industry since the 2nd biggest player (Auto Windscreens) went bust.

If it is bad enough, I will just lean on the windscreen and have a new one. Especially so when I had a wiggly-wire heated screen on my Galaxy.

    Which Ts + Cs?

Ignore this advice - all claims (and losses) must be disclosed, and if you fail to do so you do breach policy Ts + Cs and leave the insurer the opportunity of voiding your policy when another claim turns up!
