Holidays for dog owners!

  • hi there,

my aunt has recently began holiday letting her 2 bedroom semi-detached bungalow in Harwich, Essex. She told me she hated the fact that she loved going on holiday but couldn't find anywhere dog friendly (and trust me she wouldn't part from her yorkshire terrier). So she decided to convert her bungalow home into a holiday home for dog's and their owners. The area is really nice, really quiet and it is right by the coast so the pets can take their owners for a stroll along the beach :rotfl:

We stayed at this place in Wales and was so lovely and very dog friendly with lovely walks. http://www.hoseasons.co.uk/cottages/melin-newydd-ab94?isdlnk=1&scode=ab94&acode=w7529&tidpdukcottage=cottageinfo

They have a few cottages on the site of different sizes so good for varying sized parties.

Found some great places using the "Pets Welcome" book for me and The Beast: http://www.pets-welcome.co.uk/ (very similar to the book recommended above by AbsCaveDave).

This site is also REALLY excellent: http://www.dartmooraccommodation.co.uk/pages/accommodation/dog_friendly.php.

Dartmoor was my favourite place to visit with Himself, and will be with new dog Gizmo (Jasper passed away suddenly in January :(). There are MANY dog-friendly places in Devon and elsewhere.

They mainly stipulate that any "dog toffees" are cleared up from the gardens/patio areas and that dogs are sociable and well-controlled (bearing in mind that a great many rural B&Bs/self-catering places are also working farms). A few may charge an extra £5 or £10 per night for the dog, but there are plenty who don't. A few of the higher-end hotels also offer a basket and a dinner for the discerning canine guest ;)

It shouldn't matter what breed the dog is - Jasper was a Staffie and a very "manly-man's-man", but extremely well-behaved and was welcomed wherever we stayed. I've had the misfortune of seeing the cutest little button of a doggie behaving atrociously and the pleasant experience of seeing an enormous Bull Mastiff accompanied by a Rottweiler, both of whom had the most gentle and decent manners. It's not necessarily the German Shepherd that would be turned away; it's the German Shepherd with owners who couldn't care less that their dog is interfering with wildlife and other guests, intimidating kiddies and leaving a messy trail in its untrained wake who wouldn't be wanted. OP, you don't sound like that sort of idiot; I'm sure you'll find no end of places where you and your dog will be very welcome guests.

Best wishes - have a fabulous time! xx

Have you tried www.petholidayfinder.co.uk which lists cottages, hotels etc or www.holidaylettings.co.uk where you tick a box for pet friendly cottages. If you like Wales try www.northwalesholidaylets.co.uk

We have just come back from a hoseasons 4 day break and although we now dont have rusty, I was amazed at what Whitby Yorkshire had to offer.

It was Dog Heaven, everywhere you turned there were dogs. On the beach, in the town, in the fishmongers and supermarket, even in the restaurants !

It must be the most Dog friendly place I have ever been.

Was lovely having lots of cuddles with all the dogs for us, helped a bit with the grieving process of our GSD/Retriever X.

    Honestly well worth the visit.

Vist the Rated Places website - www.rated-places.com - and click on dog friendly. The beauty of this site is that it is guests making all the recommendaitons, not the owners, so you can be assured that you are getting the truth!
The Barn in Cornwall is very dog-friendly, but try the Limefitt park too, and, if yoiu're feeling flush - Helsbury Park is unequalled.
