So much for 100 people applying for 1 job

In some instances, there may also be an element of reverse psychology at play. If I saw a job advert and I didn't think I was 100% suitable for it in terms of everything the employer was looking for, I wouldn't apply. I'd just assume that there'd be loads of other applicants who'd fit the description to the letter. I'm not defeatist or lacking in self-confidence but I think we can pretty safely say that when jobs are advertised nowadays, there are lots of other potential candidates, whether they ultimately choose to apply or not.
If I was unemployed, I'd probably just give it a go, though.
Then there's the thing of when people are employed at the moment, they're hanging on to their current jobs come hell or high water. Unless the opportunity was perfect, few right minded people would give up a current job and foresake employment rights (in the first year, or whatever) for a new job. Plus, even if times are hard in one's current job, there's always the possibility of redundancy pay, which would be lost with a whimsical move elsewhere.0 -
Part time - No...I'm looking for full time as agreed with Jobcentre.
Evenings/Weekends - No...I'm looking for Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm work as agreed with Jobcentre.
Manager - No..I've never been a manager and would never want to be. I manage myself.
Pay rate - Not mentioned so far but I bet it's near minimum wage so another no.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Even based on the sparse information posted here, it sounds like a very poorly written job specification; which would likely miss or alienate the target audience it was trying to aim for.
Aside from that, there may have been more mundane reasons which could explain why there were no applicants. Such as...Forgetting to publish / post the vacancy, advertising in a location not likely to get many views, a typing error in the contact details, e-mailed applications being filtered as spam, or applications being sent to the wrong person?
IMO, it certainly does not suggest that unemployed people are not applying for jobs.
The couple of sixth formers who were given the job also did not apply for it! So presumably they missed the appeal of the advert too. They obviously wanted the job, but would they be working there now if they hadn't been approached directly?
A good analogy would be ebay, some auctions get lots of bids while others (selling the same item) get none at all. This is clearly not because people aren't interested in buying the item but because the item with no bids was poorly advertised (e.g. in the wrong category or with missing information).0 -

Yeah, that'll be it *rolls eyes*0 -
It's not though, is it? The job my son applied for is a good job, with decent hours, excellent prospects and the application process hasn't been too onerous.
Still over 50% of the applicants failed to attend.
Yes but as I said earlier we've got no idea of the advert. There must of been something screwy about it because with so many people out of work and desperate, do you really believe that no-one would apply for a decent job? Seriously? You'd expect at least one or two applications wouldn't you. If they didn't even get those then it must have been a very bad job / advert. Most Polish people have quite good English skills
I know quite a few poles, most of them have basic english but certainly not 'quite good'. Most of them also refuse to socialise with the english and instead stick with their polish mates and then wonder why their english doesn't get any better.0 -
The school where I work, had a job advertised for a p/t manager/receptionist of the performing arts centre. Not 1 person applied for it. In the end they had to employ a couple of 6th formers.
This doesn't suprise me, we recently had similar where I work.
Where I work, we currently have two positions going, very well renumerated jobs for a well known company that were well advertised.
We advertised for 6 weeks continually and eventually had four applications - on interview day only one of them bothered to turn up for interview.
I really couldn't tell you why. The only thing I can assume is that people are not as desperate to get back in to work as it would seem. The opposite of what you know...is also true0
