It was shared receptionist/management role. They already have another manager there, but they wanted to some else to cut down the other persons hours. The two doing are splitting it between them. It was more to do with running the private hirings during the evenings and weekends.

That is a quite eclectic job description. I would think most receptionist trained people wouldn't want to apply for a management position and most management people would be put off by the receptionist part!

Something doesn't sound right about this. As usual it sounds like one of those jobs with a catch that people won't apply for because they either don't fit the very strict criteria with minimum pay or the employer is wanting everything for nothing. There have been quite a few like this recently advertised and when they get no 'victims' that apply they then end up slagging off the dole claimants on websites like thesun.co.uk etc.

This madness has to stop. Offer a decent job, decent pay, decent conditions and a decent person spec and you'll get decent applicants. IT REALLY IS THAT SIMPLE.

If I started my own company today and tomorrow advertised for staff on a commission only basis do you think I'd get any applicants? No of course not. Some people / employers need to wake up and get real. Providing work isn't all about copying the state and having a 30 page application form, 2 month waiting period, security vetting, then a CRB check, 10 year history plus 3 references as so many companies seem to think these days.

I have never seen so many pathetic excuses for the lack of applicants - they want a jack of all trades (it's called multitasking!), it needs two different skills sets (many admin managers start off in reception/ customer care roles), it might be unsociable hours (so?).

And we wonder why so many are unemployed!

It's not though, is it? The job my son applied for is a good job, with decent hours, excellent prospects and the application process hasn't been too onerous.

Still over 50% of the applicants failed to attend.

As we haven't actually seen the ad - it's only conjecture isn't it? Not an overarching comment on the state of the country and how all job seekers are completely useless.

It seems to me the recruitment strategy could be just as flawed. Just a thought.

    Why didn't you apply then?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I only saw mention of advertising in the local paper. I have begun to largely ignore newspapers in my jobsearch, in favour of the internet.

If you advertised via the Jobcentre, you'd no doubt have numerous interesting applicants sent by the Jobcentre - few of which would be suitable for the job.

What a bizarre question - it would be pretty pointless applying for a job when I don't need one!

Conjecture or not, the fact remains that the given suggestions are nonsense. Unsociable hours/ a need for multi tasking etc are no reason not to apply for a job.

In which case you could be missing out on suitable opportunities?

The majority are advertised elsewhere, or are on the internet anyway (e.g. Guardian Jobs website). Back in the late 90's newspapers had an entire section with numerous pages of jobs. These days you're lucky if there's more than two pages listing jobs, most of them being handyman seeking work type ones.

I agree, there is little in my local paper, but given that few people are reading it now, it seems a really bad move not to look in there? If I was looking for work I would not eliminate any possibility ...
