@redmalc - I've been advised that the recent malaria outbreak in the Dominican Republic was on the Haiti border, so may not be entirely necessary if you are holidaying on the coast as opposed to being inland.

There are two main ways to get Malarone in the UK.
Visit your GP/travel clinic and obtain a private prescription. Using your private prescription you can purchase Malarone in most high street pharmacies.
Usually you will have to pay for the prescription and you will pay a high price for the tablets.
Alternatively most online pharmacies have a consultation procedure which will allow you to obtain malarone online. This is generally cheaper.
You can compare prices of several online pharmacies here:

The cheapest place I have found so far is www.medexpress.co.uk

You can also save some money by buying generic malarone instead which is slightly cheaper.

My sister recently tried to get malaria tablets when she went for other exotic injections and was told it'd cost £80 from the nurse via the surgery!

She went to Asda and got 9 for £20, so just under £2 each.

If i were you i would spend the money. Malaria is no joke and if you are flying into a risk area, i would not try my luck.
Another think you might consider is talking to your doctor for something to soothe your stomach. I had to take Malarone when i flew to Indonesia last year and they upset my stomach quite a bit.

Malaria is no joke, Mrs Bob the Saver had it, bitten by mosquito (it died!) but the tablets you need depend where you are going and for how long.
The problem is advisers err on the side of caution (fair enough) and assume you will be waist deep in swamps for the duration of your trip.
Do some research, don't just rely on nursie looking up an internet page on a place she's never heard of.

    Absolutely.

The amount of people I have met - Usually young travellers, who say 'It's ok I use DEET' is ridiculous.

And don't trust the ones you buy abroad, some idiot tried selling me Malarone in Nepal, anyone who has taken Malarone will know that inside it is a distinctive brown/yellow colour, this jokers pills were white!

I know we all laugh and joke, but Malaria isn't funny.
  • I just bought my Malaria tablets from ASDA after a recommendation on here. £71 for 2 packets (29 tablets needed).
Bit shocked really as last year, I recall Boots selling me one pack of 16 pack for £20. Oh well, they're bought now, I'll need to cut my budget somewhere else, maybe sleep rough for a night! :)

Remember that there are many different anti-malarials, suitable for different places and different kinds of patients. Perhaps last time you bought a cheaper drug than this time?
