Just for anyone else who reads this post...
I waded through the contract last night and found the following (paraphrased):

cancel after the 7 days and before the surveyor and you have to pay 25%.
after surveyor and before manufacture 30% (i think)
after manufacture and before installation 80% (i think)

Therefore much to my dismay, ill be sticking with them.
If everyone could cross there fingers for me i would be much obliged!

    Thanks all.

Have you only paid the deposit so far, or have you given the full amount?

If you've still money left to pay, make sure that at least £100 of this payment is made with a credit card so thet in the event that you do have problems, you will at least have "Section 75" to fall back on should you need it.

That's exactly what went through my head when reading that post. :D

On the flip-side - a friend is getting new windows soon from Anglian, so I hope she also gets an "installation ... of the highest standards". ;)

As far as I can tell, you were happy with the price. What's put you off are some bad reviews.

It's not great money-saving advice, but if you can find somewhere else that's cheaper by at least the 25% you'll be charged to cancel, you'll still be paying the same (or even less) but you'll be more confident about the workmanship.

    Worth a thought, I guess?

  • Hi - just read your post re cancelling with Anglian and have the following points to make:-
    1. Your deposit of £50 would be the only thing you would lose - they haven't surveyed yet and if you don't allow them to, i.e keep putting them off when they try and book the survey, eventually they will write to you and tell you that if you don't complete the survey, you will lose your £50
    2. If you call them and explain that you cannot continue with the order due to personal reasons (the reason being they receive less than glowing reports on the internet), they will generaaly accept that and refund your deposit. (of course they don't need to know what your personal reason is!!!)
    3. Having worked for them as a sales manager, I know that a £50 deposit is seen as a "weak sale" - even if its on their finance plan
    4. If it is on finance, you have legally longer than the 7 days to cancel - it's generally 10 days from the date of the execution of the policy which is always AFTER the survey.
    5. Use a local company, but make sure you check them out first - go and see a job they are fitting now, as that will be much harder for them to put you in touch with a "friendly" customer (often someone with a connection with the company or a vested interest in you signing up)
    6. Having left Anglian some years ago to start my own building company, I can say I would never go back to work for anyone who feels it ok to try and hard sell - Never, never, never sign up on the night - the "special deals" are only special for the sales rep and the company, not the customer who would always be able to get the same deal (and better), the next day, week or month. The efficiency discount, the showhome discount, the discount because your neighbour 5 streets away is having one etc, etc are all ficticious designed to play on the customers greed - making them think they have got a great deal - dont fall for it - you did well only giving a £50 deposit
Hope that helps for what its worth

Just had our windows fitted by Anglian. The windows are excellent and of a high quality and the 2 guys who did the fitting were very helpful and worked extremely tidily. Was expecting a lot of mess but there was hardly any. The only major casualty was a plant they stepped on in the front garden.

Didn’t get the hard sell at the beginning apart from “this discount and that discount”. Never signed on the day and kept going back to them to get a bit more knocked off. In all it was probably two weeks before I signed up.

    Negative points:
    • the sales women was always late for her appointments
    • the surveyor gave the impression that we had to arrange a survey to fit in with his personal life (didn’t want to come out at the weekend) rather than us being the customer
    • a chap from the depot rang to say that the windows were in and they wanted to fit the next day even though we had given them 6 months notice and previously agreed a specific date. To be fair a girl from the office did ring the next day to say that the agreed installation date was agreed and the other guy was trying it on

I must admit if they couldn’t get the customer service bit right I did have all my fingers and toes crossed with the installation but didn’t need to worry. If you don’t mind playing their game over the quotes and keep pressing them until you get to the price you want to pay I would certainly recommend them to others
  • I cancelled my Anglian window contract on day 8 after being assured by the salesman that all I would lose would be my £50 deposit.

Within 3 days of cancelling I received a very terse letter headed in block capitals BREACH OF CONTRACT, and telling me I was liable to pay up to 80% of the contract price.

Of course this is rubbish at such an early stage of cancellation, but the only thing in black and white is that after 7 days you are liable to pay 25%; in my case over £2000. There is no mention of only losing your £50 deposit.

Frankly I was panicked and stressed by this. All I had was a verbal agreement by the salesman about only losing the £50.

You are asked to call a regional sales rep, who is clearly there to try to do you a better deal...to play nice cop to the nasty cop of the letter.

I told him about what the salesman told me. After checking he phoned back to say that yes, all I would lose was my £50 as I had cancelled after the 7 day cooling off period and then went on to offer me a better deal on the windows on which I could reclaim my £50.

My advice. If you want to cancel make sure you do so within seven days IN WRITING, a phone call will not do.

When you arrange to see the salesman tell him in advance of his visit that you have no intention of signing the contract on that day but want to keep it at home to think about it. That way he knows in advance not to try pressure selling as you can rebut him with the statement that you had already told him that you were not prepared to sign on that day.

Take notes on what the salesman tells you. If it contradicts what it says in the contract about liability for cancellation charges or anything else, write or e-mail him to ask him to tell you in writing what he told you.

I have no idea what the Anglian product is like. But their standard cancellation letter is bullying and perhaps meant to intimidate people into being bounced into a purchase they might not otherwise want. it leaves a bad taste in the mouth and because of this I would not recommend dealing with Anglian Home Improvements.

But on the 25%...hold your nerve and don't be intimidated.
