Mainline trains - drink away! The train I commute to work on has a buffet car selling the stuff.
Most National Rail services allow alcohol, although as has been said, some are designated as 'dry' trains. Having said that, 'dry' trains aren't supported by the National Rail Byelaws as such, therefore, the only thing you'll potentially be prosecuted for if you break this rule, is failing to comply with a reasonable request, which is covered by the Byelaws. Obviously if you're disorderly, incapable or a general knobhead with it, that's another matter.0
