You can't 'demand that they remove you' from their lists. Spam is entirely automated-no human intervention is involved. That's why it's so cheap, and still pays them to do it, despite the tiny response rates.
Replying simply confirms that your email address is a live one, which makes it 10 times more valuable to spammers. They will then sell it on accordingly.

if the spam is being filtered into the spam folder then just simply ignore it, don't reply to it, don't open it, don't bounce it, spam is spam forget what it contains it's spam.

but if the spam is getting into your inbox and setting up filters doesn't prevent it then I would say switch email accounts, gmail has fantastic spam filtering and hotmail after years of having useless spam filtering is now as good as gmails.
it might be a pain to switch your accounts to a new email but it's the only way to actually stop spam, (until you start getting it at your new address).

I wouldn't say your work email will have better spam protection or be safer than another email, but you are doing the right thing on using different accounts depending what account it is, personally I wouldn't use a work email as technically your employer owns and has access to that email, but you are free to set up more than one email for different things, say a gmail with 2-step verification for important things (online shopping/banking/paypal) then a hotmail (or another gmail) for less important things and then if you need it a 3rd email (I call it a spam email) for literally everything else (if something asks for an email give them the spam email and it don't matter if they spam it)

the saying should be: "there's only three things in life that are certain, death, taxes and spam" :p

I’m on a Mac and as already stated, it’s efficient at removing junk such as this.

My work email address is a haven for this sort of stuff, as it’s publicly available for the world to see, as is my mobile number.

It’s generally a case of delete, ignore, delete.

when I use an email client I specifically turn off spam filtering because the mail server does all the filtering, and places the spam into it's own IMAP spam folder, if I really need to I can look in that folder but I specifically set the spam folder to not download the contents or headers to the computer, because it's pointless.

but I just use the web interfaces now-a-days as I find it's faster as you don't have to wait for the email to download when you start the email application and because it's cleaner as you don't end up with gigabytes of email on your system.

Thanks for all this. My spam box is empty so I now longer have to think about it. Fortunately my inbox hasn't been a problem.

    Thank you x
