Virgin Mobile phone delivery query

I Bought a new phone from V. Mobile, On completing checkout I was given the option of 'Standard Next Day Courier Delivery' - at a cost of £7.90, via Yodel, with the option of choosing the day.
As i knew I had to be in for a work related delivery a few days later I booked it in for last Thursday delivery and received several emails - Order completed, order collected by courier ect yet despite this the phone didn't arrive and the tracking number stayed firmly on 'Out for Delivery' till the call centre closed at 8 pm!
I checked the tracking before work on friday to find it updated as 'Out for delivery - possible delay', tried ringing and was told that the courier had it so they couldn't help till it was returned as undelivered :eek:
It was finally delivered at almost 7pm on Friday night, luckily 5 mins before i left for the weekend! surely this isn't on? I've tried contacting V.M but they have said they are only willing to discuss if the item is being returned - Frankly I'm more than a little peeved! Even the Royal mail have the good grace to compensate for missed special delivery! :mad:
Surely this isn't on? I've paid for a designated service on a designated day so who do I direct my annoyance at? Both companies would happily charge me if I dared to not be in!

You should have refused it when it was delivered late stating that you have paid for the previous day and it hadn't arrived on time. Make a formal complaint in writing.0

At the very least Virgin Mobile ought to refund your delivery charge, I've also had a couple of problems with Yodel's 'next day/nominated' delivery and the company I was purchasing from refunded the delivery cost for two days.0
