Standing Charges?

I work as a distributor for the Utility Warehouse and we provide business energy as well as domestic.

There is a very small window of opportunity for any business to change supplier - usually3/4 weeks -before they are tied in for another year, and usually 2 weeks before they get the renewal letter and 2 weeks after.

It may be too late already for you to change Ruth.

The easy way to tell if you are domestic or business rated is -
domestic electricity meter nos begin with so1 or so2, and Businesses are so3 and so4.
Also domestic customers are charged 5% vat and businesses are charged 17.5% vat and sometimes ccl on top (climate control levy)

Standing charges also differ with providers, for example you are in Derbyshire so if you come under the old Midlands electricity region, our standing charge is £2.00 a month.

I hope you manage to sort it out ruth, but its likely you may be tied into them another year unless you register you definitely want to leave, then they charge you on a daily rate until you go.

    I hope this helps you.
    Chris

    Thanks chris,

Ive only just now checked on here and didn't realise that there would be so many replies - thanks all.

Chris, thanks for your reply too. It is interesting to see that you are on a standing charge of £2 per month (who with?)

Ours currently works out at 16p per day and their recent letter says our new charge will be £41.30 per quarter. I don't understand why they hav'nt quoted the per day charge. By my reckoning thats around 46p per day (treble what we currently pay) It has crossed my mind that they have just made a mistake on the letter and it should read £14.30 per quarter.

Anyway I'm about the call them again and ask a few more questions, will let you all know how I get on.
It is unwise to pay too much but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, all you lose is a little money... that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot...it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better (John Ruskin - 19 ctry author, art critic & social reformer)
  • no one seems to be answering at powergen this morning so I found a geo-number from the say no to 0870 site. Amazingly someone answered straight away :j

After a few consultations with his manager they came to the same conclusion as me and a mistake had been made in the letter. The standing charge is now back down to 16p per day.:T

Only trouble is, in the mean time, I phoned scottish power and got a much better rate all round from them. I really don't want to go through the hassle of changing so I'm now waiting for a call from powergen business dept to see if they can match scottish power. Anyone know what the chances of this are?

    Talk to you laters

all change again. Powergen advisor now going back on their word and telling me that the other guy I spoke to doesn't know what he is talking about.

So my standing charge now stands at 38.64p per day.

Have contacted scottish power again(business dept this time) and they too are telling me that previous information given to me was wrong.
Having said that their business rates still beat powergens.

Can anyone recommend another electricy supplier that I can call?

    Hi babe ruth
Maybe i can help and advise you,
I have just accepted a job in the commercial energy market, where i have several contacts with differerent suppliers.

It sounds to me you are certainly on a commercial tariff,(which as a non residential supply would be correct)

However as a registered charity i think i recall you should only pay 5% vat and would be CCL excempt

pm me if you want to (with the top line of your mpan number) and i will then get back to get you some prices,
    Regards Dave
