Either way Masonics prices relate to Domestic tariffs. - Your not on a capped rate. Business is alwasy one / two year fixed contract.
As there seems to be some confusion over this, let me state that the figures I posted were intended only as an example to show that, at least for domestic tariffs, standing charges are not the same for all suppliers. I thought my comment to that effect in my OP might have been sufficient.

Gal, do you know whether all suppliers are forced into charging the same standing charges for business accounts?

    Couple of points worth noting...........
Ebico DO NOT supply business customers only domestic.
Standing charges for business supply of electricity is usually on a per day basis and can range from 34p per day up to around 54p per day plus VAT
    There is quite a difference

Not the same standing charge no. Its dependant on company - And your original post just had prices nothing else - I merely pointed out there domestic and not business.

However as this was mentioned and someone else then recommended Ebico - Who as it has been pointed out already only supply domestic customers. Its very important that its noted that domestic and business are 2 completely different kettle of fish.

However as you have already shown across suppliers the standing charge does vary and is applied in very different ways.

Perhaps you didn't see the bit that said, "So at least for domestic accounts, standing charges are certainly not fixed by area." ;)

In that case it's quite worrying that the OP has been advised by Powergen that she would be stuck with the same standing charges no matter which supplier she chooses. The person she spoke to obviously was 'trying it on'.

Whether that was there or not - Your correct - I didn't see it originally but it may have been there.

And its not worrying its just that whoever she spoke to is incompetent. What ever supplier there with there will be a standing charge in one form or another.

I don't need to make excuses for powergen - I work with the people and know full well what some of them are like.

:rotfl: Well, that's also a distinct possibility.

    babe ruth -
yes a church does count as "business" for electricity purposes. As opposed to domestic/residential.

I think as a general rule "standing charges" have gone up for business customers over the last couple of years. However there's nothing to stop you shopping around. If you take a look on the internet you may be able to find some energy brokers who may be able to find you a good deal. With business they get their commission direct from the supplier so you wouldn't pay more and you may find a good deal.

Also check what VAT rate you are paying and will be paying. Most churches can get VAT at 5% rather than 17.5%. You'd probably need to provide a VAT declaration certificate to your new supplier.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

I work as a distributor for the Utility Warehouse and we provide business energy as well as domestic.

There is a very small window of opportunity for any business to change supplier - usually3/4 weeks -before they are tied in for another year, and usually 2 weeks before they get the renewal letter and 2 weeks after.

It may be too late already for you to change Ruth.

The easy way to tell if you are domestic or business rated is -
domestic electricity meter nos begin with so1 or so2, and Businesses are so3 and so4.
Also domestic customers are charged 5% vat and businesses are charged 17.5% vat and sometimes ccl on top (climate control levy)

Standing charges also differ with providers, for example you are in Derbyshire so if you come under the old Midlands electricity region, our standing charge is £2.00 a month.

I hope you manage to sort it out ruth, but its likely you may be tied into them another year unless you register you definitely want to leave, then they charge you on a daily rate until you go.

    I hope this helps you.

Are you referring to meter profile numbers - As Meter Serial numbers can begin with anything.

Incase you start getting people asking why there meters start with different numbers.

Before you listen to any advice could you advise whether your on a business tariff or domestic.

As it sounds to me like your business as powergen do not charge a standing charge on domestic products. Which means any of the figures by masonic are actually incorrect.

The reason why your seeing your prices going up is probably because you have been on a fixed contract rate which has protected you against price increases. You can move from business to domestic with powergen under certain circumstances (Which you will need to check with them) which means the standing charge would be removed and you pay for what you use through a 2 tier system.
If your a low user however this will work out miles cheaper then the business tariff your currently on.

    Thanks for confirmation.

So, Powergen have no genuine tariffs without a standing charge? You either pay an overt standing charge or a hidden standing charge in a two tier system where you are charged extra for the first 225 kws pq.(to claw back the standing charge)

Does any company out there have a genuine no standing charge policy apart from Ebico.
