Something delivered I didn't order!

OK, a box has arrived at my back door, no delivery note, no references or company details of who sent it. It has my name and address on it and inside are some speakers. I have looked up the speaker manufacture, but lots of companies sell them.

I have checked my credit cards to make sure I didn't order whilst drunk or fradulent activity - nothing. What do I do?

How long could I reasonable hold onto these for the shipper to make contact or realise their mistake? At what point could these reasonable be considered to be mine! Remember, my name on the box, even though I didn't order them. I can't hold onto them for ever for someone to realise their mistake and I don't have an address or contact details to send back.

I am thinking of just leaving them in the corner for a month or so to see what happens.

Any thoughts on the legal aspect to this?

Wait for some scammer posing as a courier to knock at your door to say they need to collect and take them back to the depot.

They will go nowhere near the depot.

Is there absolutely nothing on the box apart from your name and adddress.

"PA/NSE services" and a barcode, that's it! Looked on Google doesn't appear to mean anything?!

Have you entered any competitions that they could be a prize for?

Could they be a present from someone? Is it your birthday (now or soon?) - I often send my mum presents from Amazon and other online retailers, and occasionally one makes its way to her without any documentation inside. Could one of your relatives be wondering why you haven't called them to say thanks? Just a thought.

How were they delivered - if by courier, they should have a record of who sent them.

Not my birthday and don't think I had entered any competitions! I assume it was delivered by a courier but no delivery note and wasnt signed for. My best guess at the moment is that one of the many companies I have ordered things from in the past has accidentally pulled me out of their database. So assuming I don't know where to return, how long should I wait before I can reasonably expect that it was actually meant for me from a mystery benefactor. By the way the value is £1000 online so I am sure someone will miss them, but cant believe not signed for or no delivery note!

Also why should the onus be on me to figure this out. Shouldn't I just sit back and wait for the supplier to discover their error? I am already wasting time posting messages and searching google !

Is there nothing on the box to indicate which courier it is?

The difficulty with advising how long until it becomes your property is that there is no real answer. There is law relating to "unsolicited goods", but this would appear to be a mistake as opposed to someone sending you something with the intention of later trying to get money from you.

One thing I would be aware of is the possibility of it being a scam, as McKneff describes. If someone does try to collect it, do not hand it over without being certain of who they are. If they claim to be a courier, ask them to wait whilst you verify this, and don't use the number they give you.
