I need a higher fence- can anyone help?!

Hi,
We have lovely old neighbours although a little bit nosey our fence is currently about four foot high and staggered because our garden is sloping .
The current fence is secured with concrete posts, would we have to entirely remove these posts and replace with taller ones or is there another solution?
thanks,
Casey

Nothing to stop you simply removing the existing and fitting taller panels or even cheaper add trellis type tops to the existing panels, whichever way they will need securing with a continous top rail and timber overlaps where they join if going route be.
1 thing to consider is the effect it will have on neighbourly relations, you need a good reason at hand to avoid offending the old chap, if you know what I mean;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
And also, which I found out when I did some research into back garden fencing, you're not allowed to go above 2 metres in height. That includes the trellis.

How about planting something along the fence that will grow up taller? More subtle than just putting up big fence panels!0

I would second this Jasmine, Clematis Montana and Honeysuckle would all grow taller and then necessitate a trellis above! Also plenty of shrubs will grow to 6 ft including Ceanothus. Buddleia and Lavetera will grow quite tall in one year.0 -
you can fit higher fencing in small posts, but th higher you go you get the 'flex' factor esp. in high winds0

I think it looks terrible if you put in panels that are higher than the posts. Are you going to have gaps between the panels or put in wooden posts sitting on top of the short concrete ones?
Would there be space to put some tall plants in pots on your side of the fence to give you a bit of screening?0 -
Thanks for the replies everyone it has given me things to think about. We definitely need to raise at least the first panel to six foot so that we can sit out and have some privacy. The other panels are staggered as we are on a downward slope so not sure what to do. The patio is slabbed up to the fence so maybe potted plants would be better to provide a screen. I'm still concerned about how the higher panels would cope with wind if only supported part way by post.
I did consider panels of open trellis as I though this might cope better in wind ,then grow climbers over it but the neighbours dont want any plants growing on their side!Casey0 -

Another vote for this, I have a beautiful hedge of Buddlia, with clematis growing through it, forsithia and elderflower growing from cuttings two years ago. Dosent need any trellis and actually needed cutting down this year. I would, from experience avoid honey suckle, too high maintaince. Good luck, even with lovely neighbours (and mine is far from)you need your privacy.Slimming World at target0 -
Are they slotted posts?"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0
