Your downstream noise margin is 7.5db, i,e the router is syncing at its optimum speed. You won't get a faster connection until you sort out your internal extention wiring. The line is 20 db so Orange are correct in saying you should be going considerably faster.
The usual advise would be to remove the bell wiring, pin 3 of the phone sockets, however since you can't identify the master thats going to be problematic, till you do.

Not sure why you believe that there is a problem with the extension wiring. The router is syncing at the maximum speed for G992.1(G.DMT).

whoops, you are right regarding the speed.
I would have expected a far higher downstream noise margin though even at 8Mbps sync with a 20db line.

Orange need to enable G.992.5 and then the speed should increase significantly with no changes to internal wiring!

So, it doesn't matter that I am not plugged into the master socket?

Best I call Orange tech line and complain about the speed? Will also find out about activating G.992.5

But you can get cable broadband right now with Virgin in most homes.
Rubbish! Not unless you live in a large town or city.

Where we live is a large estate built onto the side of a village about 2 miles from the exchange in the local town. The chance of the estate getting fibre even from BT within the next few years is zero.

    From here BT say.
We plan to roll out super fast fibre to two-thirds of the UK by the end of 2014
in other words, one third still have to rely on copper wire ADSL.

Its always best to have your router plugged into your master socket. I had BT out for a line fault recently and they replaced the master socket and also fitted a prefiltered faceplate. One I had not seen before either like this:-

Spent about 30 mins on the phone to Orange....

All he kept on going on about was to plug it into the master socket, I don't think he understood that I couldn't find it!

My upgrade (to 17MB) which I spoke to Orange about last week still hasn't even been ordered, so that has now been ordered, wait another 10 days, then see if the speed increases...

May hold off on ripping up the floorboards quite yet, thanks for all your help

If you have a very old installation, have a look at some of these.

This may sound like a stupid question, but the master socket wouldn't be in a cupboard under the stairs would it? :o
