Hi,
We have recently moved house, and the new house is quite old (1890's).
The internet in the new house is very slow (about 2mb down), and I can only put this down to the fact that I cant locate my master phone socket.
We are with Orange, and they have said I should be getting around 17mb.
The layout of the phone wiring in the house is as follows.
I have disconnected the downstairs extension cables, and disconnected the cables out on the socket upstairs, but my speed is still just as slow!
I have assumed that the socket I am plugged into now is nearest the master socket as the ones downstairs are now dead but my line upstairs is working...
The phone line enters the house at about 2M height, so around the floorboard height of my bedroom. I have looked everywhere including in the attic but still no joy...
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions, or would I have to get a BT engineer out to locate it? As we are on Orange, is it BT who would attend?
Thanks
Rick

- 1x double extension cable - end of line downstairs
- 1x single extension socket, cables in then out again - downstairs
- 1x double extension socket, cables in and out - upstairs (router plugged in here)

Internet by POTS is an outdated technology, being replaced by BT themselves in favour of HFC (hybrid fibre-copper), i.e. BT Infinity.
But you can get cable broadband right now with Virgin in most homes. If you are concerned about internet speed I suggest you switch to cable. You will get virtually the advertised speed - at least it is much likely to be closer to it than ADSL (what you've got).
With regards to finding your master socket, no one here has a better chance than you in your own home of finding it.0 -
Are you getting Phone from Orange as well as Internet ?
Have a look at http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search for you exhange and see if Orange are LLU at your exchange if not then the 17Mb quote is not possible. If you are unbundled then they ought to be able to check from the exchange to see what speed you are syncing at.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . In case you are wondering POTS refers to plain old telephone service.
It is how most of us get our internet although its more usually refereed to as ADSL.
OP can you log on to your router and post your line statistics.

If Virgin were in the street I would have Virgin!
Exchange is LLU enabled.
Would it be a BT engineer to attend, even though it is an orange line? (Phone and internet from Orange)

Have you actually found where the telephone line enters the building? Do any of the sockets have a BT logo (either present or historic)?
If you dont have a master socket then you normally wont be charged for installing one. If you do then its often down to the engineer if you get charged or not.0 -

BT manage Orange internet, in any event it will be a B|T Openreach engineer who comes out.
Any joy on those line stats? That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
The single extension socket downstairs had a BT logo on, but was only an extension (no capacitor inside) and its disconnected now and line still works .
Line enters front of house at floorboard level with front bedroom, downstairs lines disconnected, upstairs only 1 socket connected.
The line enters from the telegraph pole and the wire is black, maybe I need to start pulling up the carpets!!
Just trying to get line stats, Orange gave me a new Bright box and logged onto the router but just trying to find the right place for the line stats.0 -

Can you read that or do you need me to tidy up/pull out key bits? Looks like Orange haven't activated the faster speed anyway!!0

Looks like you are on adsl2 not adsl2+ , have you tried a new filter the modem may not be syncing at the higher rate, with 22db down you should get approx 17Mb adsl2+ and 7 with adsl24.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex .
