We take boots extra strength (the silver bottled spray), my husband ALWAYS gets bit, I don't.
I always get bitten and my husband doesn't. He says that the best protection is to always go out with someone the mozzies like better:rotfl:0 -

The avon stuff is very good for the evenings, I never got bitten wearing it but obviously no good in the day with suntan lotion.
Go to Millets and buy the repellent in there, part of the life systems range I think, can't remember - lasts for ages and is very good. In Cuba last year got attacked by sandflies/fleas and i squirted this a bit on my towel and it was enough to keep the pests away. The Millets stuff is good for under sun screen so if you are sun bathing or sight seeing its good. My daughter used it when she when to Uganda & Kenya and didn't get bitten once.Aim to win in 2013 - a holiday somewhere nice, New York break, treats for family & friends & some cash would be lovely!!!0 -
I use Jungle Formula lotion. It's not that cheap as it costs around £6 for 175ml but it's used by the Forestry Commission I find it very effective. Tesco, Sainsbury, Boots & Superdrug usually stock it so it's worth checking around for the cheapest price.

I've used this in Corfu - where there were swarms of mossies at night and it worked - usually I'm eaten alive, but this was reccommended by a travel agent who used it in India, it's brilliant and you can usually order it from Boots on 2 for 2 - it's a rool on and suitable for young children and it's about £6 a bottle. Brilliant stuff - never been touched with this on.Titch

I always use a product called Mosquito Milk. It is about £7 for a roll-on bottle. You only need to apply stripes of the stuff not cover all exposed skin so it is economical to use. It is not unpleasantly perfumed or greasy. Very effective.0

Mozzies - Ah the bane of tropical travellers.
For many years I have taken GARLIC capsules on a daily basis. I never get bitten or attacked rest of family do, except 10yr old grand daughter because she is a Marmite freak I am informed if you eat it daily for 3 weeks prior to visit you could be safe.
Hope these ideas help cheaper than many of the branded items.
