Galaxy ace - gmail inbox not updating

Hi
Just purchased a Samsung galaxy ace on PAYG from Tesco. One issue I see is my gmail email inbox does not update as new emails come in. The inbox showns the same emails to date when I bought the phone. I know this because when I log onto gmail on my laptop it shows newer emails in inbox. Is there some setting I need to change? The instructions supplied with phone are very scant to say the least.

Any views on contract sims vrs PAYG?

    Are you using the app called 'Email' or 'GMail'

    I recommend that if you are using 'Email' app then ditch this and download the Gmail app from the market.

    Go to settings >Accounts & Sync > Pick your google account > Sync Gmail.

    It should then start downloading messages.

    MM, downloaded manual which I'll read over. Thanks.

    Owen, phone has email & gmail icons as supplied. I'm trying to use gmail icon, should I delete both icons and download new gmail app? If so how do you go about downloading apps?
    As you'll probably can tell this is my first android phone, last phone was clockwork, by comparison.
