Thomson's Hand Luggage

Only 5kg - how strict are they?

Trying to avoid having to check a bag into the hold for a forthcoming flight from Doncaster
We do have bags already booked but would rather be away from Lanzarote airport ASAP and was hoping just to take [Ryanair hand luggage sized] bags on-board but I'm not sure we'll make 5kg
I've been on a few Thomson flights before and I don't ever remember them weighing hand luggage.
At the end of the day, we can simply check them in if needed but just wondering if we're likely to get away with it.

    Hi
I travelled back from Lanzarote in April and although they hadn't weighed my hand luggage on the way out from the UK, it was weighed on the way back! We have been out to Lanzarote 20+ times and this is the first time that it has ever happened. Apparently, a new directive was introduced in January this year and staff are supposed to weigh hand luggage. They wouldn't even let me have a small handbag and my cabin bag. Maybe it was just a jobsworth but I will be really cautious when I go back in June :(

They have started weighing it and are VERY strict.

We had to move stuff around at Manchester in March this year before a flight to the Canaries.

Put as much as you can in your pockets before check-in and put it back in your hand luggage as soon as you've left the desk.

    Thanks all

Guess we'll just have to see what happens
There's no stress really as hold bags are paid for anyway, we'll just make sure we have our on-board essentials ready to take out.
The flight is due in at 21:10 and we're not keen on missing a meal and a drink on our first night so we want to get to PDC in time to eat

I think that it depends which Hotel and resort that you are staying in - some of the hotels that we have used have actually offered us food in the restaurant, despite the fact that we are late. Maybe give Thomsons a ring and ask them if this is available at your hotel.

We're staying at the Cinco Plaza apartments in Puerto Del Carmen
There's a reasonable bar/restaurant 50m away, we were hoping to catch that before they stop serving food [10:30]
It's only 10 minutes in a taxi so there's hope
We're going SC so the resort restaurant may stay open if they're expecting a lot of guests I suppose.

We fly 4 times a year and the only time our hand luggage has been weighed was at Doncaster with Thomson ..was overweight as well
Even Ryanair havent weighed our bags just a quick glance down at the bags

Its a lottery though ,some do some dont
    Have a nice day :)

Bear in mind also that the hand baggage is ONE bag. This means that you need to put your handbag into your carry-on as they will not allow even a handbag as additional luggage. They are pretty strict on weight at Manchester airport as well.

On our last trip with Thomson in March, we had booked a premier package which gave us 7kg of hand luggage each. I made sure to take the relevant document with me to use on the return journey if the weight was queried.
  • Daughter and I flew with Monarch last month from Gatwick - they weighed our hold luggage (one piece which we shared) and our individual hand luggage (10kg). Although we were under our total allowance they made us move stuff around so that each bag was within its allowance.

Flew back with Thomas Cook airlines who only allow 5kg hand luggage so spent considerable time and effort while packing up ensuring everything was in order. At Tenerife airport they didn't weigh it!

It seems to be sporadic - I flew with Thomson to Cyprus and they did weigh some peoples luggage and it had to be put in the hold. Good luck with a quick turnaround this time!

    We'll give it a go
if their issue is people avoiding paying for hold luggage, that doesn't apply to us so maybe I can persuade them to be lenient :)
