I wouldn't enjoy a studio with open plan kitchen. But one studio room plus separate kit and bath is fine.

Any nominations for really comfortable sofa-beds, actually suitable for sleeping night after night, not just occasionally? IMHO these are few and far between.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)
  • I had a sofa bed in my studio flat in France. It was incredibly comfy too for night after night use. It was a metal framed one which was on a kind-of swinging frame where you flattened out the two halves which met at the centre (sorry v hard to explain!). From a French furniture shop i think, but it was well comfy, quite hard and sturdy. I used to keep it as a bed when i knew it was just me, and make it back into a sofa if i was having guests.

The kitchen was in the same room too, but separated by a kind-of ledge, which worked for me, as i could see the TV whilst cooking/doing dishes!

It was my first time living alone, so the one room felt v cosy, if i'd have had a larger flat i'd have been a bit scared of noises etc!

Following my marriage split, I lived in a nice sized studio (330 sq ft) for 5 years. It was perfectly big enough for one person. Also, I bought it for 54K and sold for 120k. If there is a house price slump though, I imagine that it would be very difficult to sell as 1-bed flats would then be affordable.

I live in a 1 bed flat which is the classic 4 room type, though the kitchen is alcoved off the main living room. I love it here. This is the first time that a bedroom has just been sleeping space; for the previous 16 years my bedroom had also been my office/living room.
My conclusion: I prefer a one bed flat, but a tidy studio flat would be OK.
    Happy chappy

I spent my first 2.5 years in the UK living in central London in a room that was 7 foot by 5 foot. It was like being in a submarine. The ceiling was very low and i had to step over a divide to get into the room. I share a bathroom two floors down with about 10 other people and there was a communal kitchen. I was just happy to have my own space.
